Tom, the situation got better for that evening, but I am routinely hitting 20-30 second page loads in the Spork Template area again. It seems slow here, too, but I haven't tried enough pages outside the Spork area. It is virtually every page I try; I might even say every page. It makes using the new forum agonizing. I click a link, then switch to another tab to do something else on the web and come back in a few minutes when things are loaded.

This is Safari 3.0.4 Windows.

Can you do a traceroute to spork.macedition.com and one to new.macedition.com?

It's about as fast as anything for me, and wasn't an issue the last time you mentioned it...

Also, to rule out the Google ads, can you visit the old Spork and browse around a bit?

I'm without my Macbook Pro, so I don't have Windows to test on until it comes back from a screen repair. (Today or Friday, perhaps?)

Anyway, intuitively, it sounds like network problems of some sort, not software.

Old Spork is fine. I should also add that the top page of the Spork section loads normally; it's just the topics that are slow. I'm on Windows now, so I'll run a pathping which seems analagous to traceroute and will post times here.

Looks like step 2 is a 98% packet loss. That doesn't impact anything else I do. Ouch. Since it happens for both oldspork and newspork, and only the latter is slow, I may write that off to a Windows oddity, outside my problem.

Firefox is slow, too. The error log has a lot of "Expected declaration but fount '!'. Skipped to next declaration. http://new.macedition.com/forums/css.php?0,css" lines.

Also:

The Firefox bitchiness is just CSS I'm using that's not supported by Firefox.

The 98% dropped frames on your Windows side on the second hop is probably whatever firewall you're running taking issue with so many pings.

I'm not sure why your Mac side traceroute isn't completing - mine completes fine.

When I get my machine back, I'll be able to test on Safari/Windows and Firefox/Windows.

Safari Mac is similarly slow on the same machine. Haven't tried Firefox Mac. Firefox Windows from work is fine, so it is something about my route from home.

My router machine was pointing at my ISP's upstream DNS servers, and I've changed it to point at my local DNS caches instead. If the problem was on my end, that's probably where it would have been.

Page painting is slower in Phorum than others ...

Sorry, Tom. No scientific tests conducted. Last night page loads seemed faster, but not by much. I'd still click the read flag and then go read some other site until I felt like seeing if the page had loaded.

I think the most helpful test will be to use Safari's Debug menu and screen-cap the Web Inspector like rino did above.

I found a similar report on the Phorum forum, and they suggested turning off DNS Lookups in the admin panel.

Apparently, read.php does a lookup on your IP address, and that may cause things to take a long time.

index.php and list.php don't do the lookup.

It does seem much faster. Not as fast as I would think it ought to be, but a definite improvement. I will try to test objectively.
