Fixed. Character set conflict between Phorum, PHP and MySQL. Phorum and MySQL both thought things were UTF-8, and PHP was living in ISO-8859-1. I changed the php.ini to UTF-8 and things look like they are working now.

Can you let me know if it's faster now?
I found a similar report on the Phorum forum, and they suggested turning off DNS Lookups in the admin panel.
Apparently, read.php does a lookup on your IP address, and that may cause things to take a long time.
index.php and list.php don't do the lookup.

Yes, the link looks up any new posts for any topics you are following in any forum. The skin just defines whether or not the Check Subscriptions link is available on the pages.
Again, I'll be porting all of the Check Subs related links to the ME template once things have quieted down with it.

I can give you access to the database if you like - just PM me if that would be helpful.
Naturally, for testing purposes, I'd like to clone the db and forum so we can try the import as many times as we need to.

There appears to be a "Check Subscriptions" link now available in the Spork theme.
Please, folks, beat it up and see if it behaves the way you think it might.
Note, that at the moment, the easiest way to subscribe to threads is to check the "Follow Topic" button when you post to a thread.

My router machine was pointing at my ISP's upstream DNS servers, and I've changed it to point at my local DNS caches instead. If the problem was on my end, that's probably where it would have been.

Also, I don't see a place to get the unread count for a Topic, but I can get it for the Forum.
Unread Message count for Topics could probably be added, but I haven't found a mod to do it, which means writing my own.

I think instead of doing this, I'm going to remove the "Forum List" and "Message List" buttons.
The breadcrumb line (at the top and bottom of every page) are really the same as those two links and are bigger, and further away from accidental clicks.

I added a mod to help make this a little more complete.
The mod allows you to hide the signatures which appear at the bottom of posts. You can select this option in your Control Center.
The Spork template will ALWAYS put the signature underneath the name, and if someone has checked the "Add my signature to this message" checkbox, their signature will also appear at the bottom of their message a

There are three approaches the way I see it:
1) Reverse-engineer the WebX export file and write scripts to parse it and insert the data into the Phorum tables.
2) Create WebX pages with WebX Template language in them to output delimited format for each forum/discussion, then write scripts to parse these files and insert the data into the Phorum

and see how fast that returns. If it's speedy, that excludes DNS wonkery.

Odd.
The Firefox bitchiness is just CSS I'm using that's not supported by Firefox.
The 98% dropped frames on your Windows side on the second hop is probably whatever firewall you're running taking issue with so many pings.
I'm not sure why your Mac side traceroute isn't completing - mine completes fine.
When I get my machine back, I'll be able to test on Safari/Windows and Firefox/Windows.

Can you do a traceroute to spork.macedition.com and one to new.macedition.com?
It's about as fast as anything for me, and wasn't an issue the last time you mentioned it...
Also, to rule out the Google ads, can you visit the old Spork and browse around a bit?
I'm without my Macbook Pro, so I don't have Windows to test on until it comes back from a screen repair. (Today or Friday, perhaps?)
