My GF has Windows XP and a new web cam. What are the best ichat compatible video options? We got AIM working OK at first but that was when I had my Macbook there at her house just to test. When I tried to get it working later and I was actually at home, we couldn't make it work.

I've been having good success with Skype, however the thing that usually causes incompatibilities is firewall settings on one or both computers. I was having trouble ichatting with my parents (both computers were 10.4 at the time), and we had to turn off some of the firewall settings on their router before stuff would work.

What a journey.
FYI - My Canon scanner stopped working with Leopard. The CanoScan software was revved since I bought it, and I actually like it somewhat. But, even when going to Canon's download site, which I think they are VERY OS X FRIENDLY for their stuff, the d/ls they have do not fix the issue. I was able to delete all the old stuff, and find a NEWER v5 CanoScan software (newer than what they say will work with my Scanner) and rebooted and all is fine now.

The VueScan software, though, CONTINUED TO WORK...but I do not like it's interface. It's good and generic, but I like CanoScan's integration with their own scanners better.

Just fyi. (not article-worthy)

What a journey.

That Hammerick (sp?) can continue to out develop and out support scanners for multiple platforms than the manufacturers is quite a story indeed.

VueScan is the only scanner software I've used for many years now.

I wish VueScan could be used as a TWAIN driver in Photoshop so I don't have to use a two-step process.

where does one buy a "safe case open tool" (like shown here)? circuit city? radio shack?

Radio Shack would be my first stop.

Funny that you should bring up the Canon scanner thing today Bill. Yesterday I was close to posting a cry for help here since the LIDE25 scanner of Canon was really struggling hard NOT to work on my mum's iMac. Reinstalling the 2 driver versions that are on the website a few times finally brought the damn thing to life again. From what I've read tho, is their driver software one big pile of steaming ...

I've also checked Vuescan but I'll let my mother give Canon's software a shot first.

Yep, mine is the LiDE 20. I really like it for what it does. I installed the v5.0.1.2. Their site says NOTHING about this version for the lide 2x/3x, from what I see.

Now, I can't even find the link I got it from....(looking)...

okay, here it is.

It sure was wonky getting it installed. Not at all like the first time I ever did. But, perhaps on a fresh install of Leopard it would be smoother.

What a journey.

Hmm, that's interesting. I've used the Canon site to find drivers and got no further than a 4.9 something...

Yep, also the Canon USA site only comes back with that version.

So, how come MacUpdate has a newer one? Also, the reviews tell basically the same story that I ran into. How do manufacturers get away with such shite?

edit; I get it now, the newer version only supports newer scanners. Nice...

OK, well, since it sort of works now, I'll leave it alone...

So, how the fsck do I draw a straight line with the brush tool in Photoshop CS?

The online help says that I can create a path and then stroke it with the brush tool. (No comments from the peanut gallery, please.) But the "Stroke Path" menu item is always greyed out, as far as I can tell. Any help greatly appreciated.

You have to create a new path first (from the popup in the paths palette), then draw it. If you draw a path first, PS wants to make it a vector mask.

Excellent! Thank you.

Is there a html/css guru in the house?

My girlfriend had never seen HTML before, a few months ago I installed Seamonkey on her flower power iMac and she started building her site in it (the word slow doesn't really describe the way that Mac feels). After 2 days Seamonkey was degraded to a text editor with preview, she didn't use the graphical HTML editor anymore, she was already deep into css and xhtml and I didn't have a clue anymore what she was doing.

So her site works now: http://www.bricolore.nl/

However, she'd like to make the top border and framework smaller since it kind of takes up a lot of display real estate, but doesn't know where to begin.

Anybody have a clue?

It looks like like a fairly clean stylesheet - just reduce the height value in:

#header {
margin-bottom: 5em;
padding: 0em;
height: 11em;

the file is styles.css

Shift restrains any tool in PS to a straight line.
