Qarbon looks interesting ... the site is almost too slick -- don't like the Mac Office-ish icons but the tools seem promising.

Please do report.

Hmm, interesting. At the moment I'm involved in the development of an e-learning platform. Could you elaborate a little bit what you're doing in this field?

It was stupid. I just had to keep trying the same things a few times until it took. I got it to restore the 10.4 image I made, the second time, then it allowed me to do an upgrade. Never changed anything in terms of options - it was all correct off the bat. Took the past two days. At the same time I was troubleshooting my brother's iBook, just upgraded to Leopard and no internet. I thought it might be something that the 10.5.1 upgrade could fix so I had to dl the update and copy it over finally, and eventually found out that my lazy brother had denied "kernal" access to the Internet when Little Snitch popped up on startup.

Ooh! Scary! Scary! Don't we look mean? You can't see me! But I can see you!
My mom's old white macbook (G4 ibook) croaked. What can I do with it besides throwing it away or using it as a dragging anchor when trolling? The symptoms are: It won't boot period. The last time it was on it got very hot and didn't cool down for nearly two hours. Changing out batteries didn't do anything. My guess is the chip/mobo went south. So anyway, are they good for parts? I'll probably try and recover the drive.

Does this guy still have cheap used ones? Might be good enough.

Interesting! But the machine was always a little flaky so I think I'd just buy a new one if I were to really want one.

Tliet, I have three different projects.
1) putting together some simple training videos on products that install. Short 1-3 minute videos showing how-tos on completing specific tasks.
2) training classes for doctors, salespeople for continuing education certification.
3) figuring out how to 1 and 2 for profit.

I have been using moodle as the cms platform. There are some real weaknesses in that arena that I think can be improved upon. Now all I need are the skillz. What are you working on?

I want to buy a new hard drive to serve my airport extreme base station.

low power consumption, quiet

it can be an enclosure too.

could be nice if it could do an internal RAID mirror to a second drive so if one goes south, i have the other.

could be. that kind of thing usually introduces more trouble than its worth.

what do folks recommend.

owned by the mothership.
hds for airport are NEVER stable.

If you must, a lacie USB hd works ok. you can get a 500GB for about $120.

bahamut – January 08, 2008 01:07PM Reply Quote
really? i thought la cie was THE company to run from.

IIRC RAID device to Airport Extreme is not supported, which is kind of a let down.

RAID IS supported. I thought that was weird.

If the disk is a self-contained RAID that presents itself to a computer as a single volume requiring no software support, then it is supported.

LaCie's quality has gone up together with their sales volumes. Nowadays the hardware is very reliable, pretty to look at and sells just about everywhere in really high numbers.

Tom (or anyone else)

I'm looking for a hosting service, and I know you and some others had suggested a few back on the old boards. Can you offer up some suggestions again?

Greatly appreciated!

I'm a fan of the folks at Joyent - Textpattern is associated with Joyent in some way.

Mediatemple is pretty good. They are where I sent a bunch of the folks I used to host for when we had added too many free (friend) accounts :/

Dreamhost is another one which gets good online revies.

I host for a few folks, and depending on your needs, that might be a solution too.
