Apparently in Belgium it's possible to get an iPhone without a contract. €525 for 8 Gb and €615 for the 16 Gb version.

Since I've a Vodafone contract from my work, this might be the cheapest way.

So i can see about 10 ebooks which are all public domain books by the look of it. two air hockey games (the cheaper one as shitty graphics so i guys apple isn't being that strict). two flash light apps with similar icons and a phone saber app. some real quality programming going on there.

Two guitar tuners as well. I'm a little surprised that there are so many double ups. I would have thought Apple would have been trying to get as many unique apps into the store as possible.

Also, two video poker games and three voice notes/recorder apps...

Edit: Wouldn't update for me. iPhone went into recovery twice.

Edit: Doh! Need to upgrade to itunes 7.7 before. Looks like it is working now.

My iPhone mounted okay in iTunes 7.7. Sorry for your problems, Steve.

well, it finally mounted, but update says software version 1.1.4 is up to date.

Yeah, the folks who are installing 2.0 are using a copy found on Apple's servers, that hasn't made it to Software Update. Download it, then hold the option key down when you click "Check for Update" and you can select the file on disk.

File is here.

I have not tried this, and do not recommend it. Be aware, the upgrade from 1.x to 2.0 ERASES your iPhone. It allegedly will offer to backup your phone, but you will need enough free space on your hard disk to store it all.

One of the guitar tuners is called "OmniTuner" even though it's not made by the Omni Group. Wonder how long that will last. I also noticed at lead four apps to keep your score on the golf course!

Perusing the App store actually made me think about getting an iPhone or iPod Touch.

This NY Times article is alternately interesting and flabbergasting. Some choice bits:

Mr. Jobs failed to make his personal computers dominant, in part because software developers did not write as many programs for Mac-based machines as they did for Microsoft Windows PCs. He did not make the same mistake when he developed the iPod music players. Apple’s iTunes stores, with easy and inexpensive downloads of music, gave the device an insurmountable lead, to date, over other players.

So, the successful alternative to having too few programs on the Mac was to invent a practically 100% closed platform with almost no apps?!?

The question that remains unanswered is how Apple and Mr. Jobs will manage the relationship with software developers. When the iPod was released, music executives hailed him as a savior for their flagging business. But they later complained they were not paid enough. Hollywood studio executives were even more cautious, dragging their feet for months before allowing full-length movies on iTunes.

You cannot possibly be comparing the record companies and the movie studios with ISVs!?! Can you!?!

But this does make me wonder about something. Will it be technically possible to pirate iPhone apps? How soon will that ability appear? Or is the price low enough for most apps that the demand for the ability to pirate won't be there?

as for the first, i think the key is that it's a _consumer_ system -- in fact, i bet most buyers don't even consider it a "system", but an ipod. and it's not priced like, nor requires from the user, as a computer does. it's a device. how many people (present company excepted) buy a cell phone based on its "system"? sure, geeks do, but there are billions of phones sold a year.

as for the second, i think it's more metaphorical, though that could be clearer. think the point is is that apple needs to tend to the big, established players (think MS, adobe, etc.) as well as the homebrew club. though i may be reading into all this.

I wholeheartedly reccomend it! (at least if you can't wait an extra day)

Here are the steps (download link as JW stated)

Note: Safari may download this as a .zip file. If it has .zip at the end, delete .zip and leave it.ipsw. If you have Safari set to expand safe files, it may try to expand this file. In this case, the original file can be found in the trash. Or turn off download safe files or download using Firefox.

1. Make sure you update iTunes to 7.7. Use Apple Software Update, not "Check for Updates" in iTunes.

2. Restart iTunes.

3. Plug in your iPhone (won't work on iPod touch)

4. When your iPhone comes up in iTunes, hold down option and click "Check for Updates".

5. Find the .ipsw file you just downloaded.

6. Wait for the update to install.

7. Wait a little more.

8. Wait a little more (seriously, it took 15 minutes on my computer)

9. Success!

10. Re-sync everything on your phone (this also takes a while).

I used an 8GB iPhone on ATT that is bone stock (no jailbreaks) and it works fine. App Store is as good as advertised. Just looking through some of the available apps, I can tell that 3G is really going to be a boon. MLB has a great app giving you play by play with in game video updates, for example.

Have already set up my exchange server at work, and have my mail and contacts from the office. Even accepted a meeting and denied another.

Now if the damned facebook app would work.

I hate the fact that you can't just delete a meeting request without response. You MUST say either Accept, Maybe or Decline.

As mentioned in the Endadget article I'm having some interface lag in my 4GB first gen iPhone after installing the not-quite-officially released iPhone 2 software. I'd probably recommend patience at this point but I wonder if the official release version will be any different. The new features are nice such as finally having contact search.
