It's not just for iPhone anymore. This time it's personal.

A new thread to discuss all things IOS.

iPhone, iPod and iPad...

As one data point, iOS 11GM runs kind of clunky on an iPhone 6s. There are lots of jerky animations, and slow app launches. The phone gets very warm, too, the first day. We'll see if that happens again after my restart of the phone. If not, I suspect we'll see a point update for earlier phones that takes out some features in the name of smoothness and battery life.

I use the reduce motion option get rid of a ton of those effects anyway.

Agreed -- though I'd forgotten all about it (turned on the reduce option really early on).

you should try the same in OS X. switching spaces is so much cleaner.

Ah, I know I should try using Spaces. I know.

iTunes 12.7 appears to have removed my right-click > Sync for my iPod (nano 3g).
anyone know how to manually force sync at this point?

I've jiggered preferences enough (sorry, can't remember what steps I took) that a connected/wired device shows up as a little button in the upper left, to the right of the pop-up Music/Movies/TV Shows/Podcasts/Audio Books control. If I click on the device button, then there'll be a Sync button in the lower right.

I used to update apps in iTunes, update and organize podcast playlists in iTunes, then one step to sync. Now I need to monitor app updates on my phone (making sure I'm on wifi) and also do the latter via iTunes. Extra work, done multiple times a day.

this is most out of left field change that caught me off guard.

I think that you can set your iPhone to only update apps if you're on WiFi.

ddt – September 15, 2017 01:49PM Reply Quote
Yeah, I have that. I just hate having any notifications on my screen, so I want to be on top of it before I go anywhere where I won't be on Wifi.

The cat has your pipe.
Interestingly, now that iTunes doesn't give access to apps through the interface, it doesn't delete the Mobile Applications it previously knew about. I'm guessing this remains part of the "to the machine" backup process.

I'm still seeing far higher power consumption under iOS 11 on my iPhone 62, though not to the point of making the phone hot to the touch (it's just warm all the time). Might want to give it a few days, now that it's generally available, to see how other people's phones react.

iPhone 62?

Ha, I often typeconfuse 3 and E.

Who's pludging to iOS11? I'm going to hold off, as I have a 6S.

ETA: Ars tested 11 on a 5S (https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/ios-11-on-the-iphone-5s-slower-but-not-quite-slow/)

I might update my more-recent iPad, see how that is. I'd like to see some ARKit stuff.

Been running it on my 6S for a while, it is fine. Anything less I would be cautious.

My 10" iPad Pro is fine with it. It's new enough that I'd be kind of pissed if it wasn't.

Thanks! Going to do it wirelessly with the iPad. Then I'll go read articles about how I'm forgetting to use all the new features.

iOS 11 on the iPad is so much better than the previous versions.
