Every election is the most important one.

What I'm really concerned about is what will happen when the bottom falls out again like we had in 2008. Early indications aren't good. I mean, in 2008 we had responsible adults in the US government. Afterwards, they should have cleaned up the financial institutions like Iceland did, that is still a huge missed opportunity which will again bite us in the arse. But I'm really concerned what actions will be taken by the radicals that are currently populating all top levels of the US government.

The Suffocation of Democracy

‘If the US has someone whom historians will look back on as the gravedigger of American democracy, it is Mitch McConnell. He stoked the hyperpolarization of American politics to make the Obama presidency as dysfunctional and paralyzed as he possibly could. As with parliamentary gridlock in Weimar, congressional gridlock in the US has diminished respect for democratic norms, allowing McConnell to trample them even more. Nowhere is this vicious circle clearer than in the obliteration of traditional precedents concerning judicial appointments. Systematic obstruction of nominations in Obama’s first term provoked Democrats to scrap the filibuster for all but Supreme Court nominations. Then McConnell’s unprecedented blocking of the Merrick Garland nomination required him in turn to scrap the filibuster for Supreme Court nominations in order to complete the “steal” of Antonin Scalia’s seat and confirm Neil Gorsuch. The extreme politicization of the judicial nomination process is once again on display in the current Kavanaugh hearings.’

Troubling, but interesting read.

I remember when the NYRB was considered apolitical, and then the first Bush administration came along, and the content reacted, and became more political in reaction to the civil liberties violations, wars, etc.

With that in mind, note how the narrative from the right that the media coverage of the Trump administration has been "more negative" or "you wouldn't ask these questions of Obama". True. Reporting about forcing a two-year-old to represent herself in court because her family was trying to get into the States to escape violence might be negative coverage -- but it's also a true fact. That it wouldn't have come up during the Obama administration, along with questions about Cabinet members being indicted, is also true. Those questions are also referring to true facts.

But it should've. Trump is a symptom, not the illness. All the other politicians have had the decency to stifle the coughs.

Funny how Democrats could get away with this because it's not like Republicans are going to call out their behavior against immigrants.

Read Michael Lewis's "The Fifth Risk" and then ask yourself again why you think this administration is finding it hard to staff technical roles (well, and add in how funding and hiring resources have been slashed).

This biggest caravan of refugees trekking towards the US is a little too coincidental to be happening right now? https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/22/growing-caravan-of-migrants-pushes-deeper-into-mexico.html

It's long been thought that the European refugee crisis has been fuelled by Russia's meddling in the Middle East. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/mar/18/putin-long-game-omens-europe-russia

Of course, the bigger picture is structural issues need resolving with active participation of the western societies, apart from closing borders. People don't leave their country because they'd like to eat at McDonald's once in a while.

If that caravan (not comfortable with that label) continues at its pace so far, it'd take months to get near the southern border of the US. I mean, they just got into Mexico from Guatemala. This area is large and harsh.

The timing is really timing of election-month rhetoric.

We're almost all immigrants and few of our families came here with assets -- including the Drumpfs.

Trump is alleging that Middle Eastern people are hiding in that caravan, drumming up more xenophobia and fear.

I no longer have words for this schmuck.

As if it wasn't clear enough from rolling back any progress that Obama had accomplished after 6 years of obstruction, the Donald is spelling it out that he views this presidency as a pissing match. What a child.

President Donald Trump continues to make calls via cell phone despite intelligence that China and Russia listen in, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Times report, citing current and former officials, said Chinese spies have listened to Trump's iPhone calls and that the President's aides had told him Russian spies were listening regularly.

Very stable genius.

So, all the figure heads and a 'MSM' channel that have been vilified by the 'suppressed' conservative media such as Fox News have received a present over the last day or so.

Trump being Trump of course, is completely innocent. And Fox News is only reporting on the sensational aftermath and is singing the praises of the president apparently completely unable to some introspective.

Yes, I thought the same thing.

Um, I think that’s giving Putin far more credit for his ability to manipulate major world events than he really has.

Far simpler to have Troll factories and kompromat on easily influenced autocrats.

This is nothing next to the volkswanderung that we're going to get as climate change starts to ruin crops and environments in the equatorial regions. We may see "caravans" of hundreds of thousands before long.
