How do you know? With the secrecy in every other aspect of the company, I'd be really surprised if we knew about the Steve-to-be. And the investors would drop the stock like a hot rock if they even had a hint Steve might leave. Besides, there's always Woz.

Woz is Scotty to Jobs' Captain Kirk.

Woz belongs in the engine room. He likes it there.

I know. It was kind of a joke. I can't see Woz in any serious board room. (And yes, I know he's on some boards. I just can't see it.)

was thinking about displays today and noticed how shabby apple's offering is. it was overdue for a replacement last year, but now they're in big trouble. does anybody buy any of these things? minimal (as in poor) controls, no usb goodness (maybe acknowledgement of apple's historic weakeness with usb devices), pricey pricey pricey. what else to say?

I agree Baha. Why is this less than half the price of this?

Specs seem the same to me...

horrible response time on the mac. bad contrast ratio. i have one of those. it's in my closet. why would i use it. old, tired junk.

baha, you have an old display in the closet? which one? what would you want for it? (my old syncmaster 192t 19" is trying its best to die, so most anything would be an upgrade.)

You will probably find the cheap display sacrifices colour fidelity to get those high refresh rates. It seems to be an industry wide trend with low end displays.

Try comparing the apple displays to monitors like these: http://www.teamdigital.com.au/products.php?products_web_group=Hardware&products_web_category=Monitors

More info about ACD 30" colour accuracy here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/30-inch-cinema-display.htm (you gotta scroll past some unboxing crap first)

Another interesting discussion about LCDs for prepress here: http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00M571
This is the SWOP certification that they mention: http://www.swop.org/certification/monitorlist.asp not a lot of monitors on there but two of them are Apple's.

Also, don't compare contrast ratio to dynamic contrast ratio. they aren't the same thing , and you certainly dont want dynamic contrast if colour fidelity is important to you.

The Samsung 226cw or it's replacement has a wider gamut than most and is bright with great response. Dunno about over time since I've had it only about 1/2 year.

But yeah...

Had great trip to WA -- we stayed in Seattle for a few days then onto Oly to my brother-in-law's house. Did a day at Ranier, and Tolmie State Park at very low tide...

We actually escaped what had been weeks of rain in Maine for a sunny and hot week in Washington. Kind of funny.
Last day was in Seattle and it rained ... flights on Jet Blue rocked. We even caught an earlier flight back to Portland which is good since it let the kids get to bed on a somewhat normal schedule.
It's sunny in Maine now.
I needed this. Back to work next week.

Thanks -- man it was great.

Now it's just gorgeous in Maine. And our park is LOADED with wild blackberries. In no time I had 2 quarts and my dog must have stripped a quart by himself. Nothing like weeks of rain and then warm weather.

sorry, i forgot that we'd put it in the wife's office, but it's no great shakes, certification or no certification. i do a lot of work that involves color and publication and i haven't found apple monitors to be that great. this one went faded quickly and that bugs me. oh and the firewire/usb fried out. they may have been good monitors five years ago, but the technology on monitors is a lot better now and they haven't kept up.

I prefer my Samsung 226CW with a huge color gamut capability as compared to others...

In other news, Maine's Apple Store opened yesterday!
I was, ahem, busy:

Busy day on the water

So did not attend but will go later today and buy new router.
