Lots of cuts recently, but very unexpected. Was kinda hoping that would be career material. Guess the name "Walt Disney Imagineering" for 2.5 years full time won't look so bad on the resume. Been writing it over the weekend here....

Got two weeks left. Quite a few layoffs where I work. It's cutting hard in my department... I have no replacement to train or anything.
SAN design / admin, server administration, renderfarm design / admin, workstations, edit bays, oh my. Soon, nobody to maintain them. This comes in the middle of a project where I just bought $1mil in hardware that has not yet been set up.

Unix/Linux question:
Anyone ever got Apple Remote Desktop to control a Linux VNC?
I can connect with VNC Viewer no problem - I just type in renderserver.company.com:1 and it brings up a prompt for the password and I can connect. Configured the Linux box over SSH to bring up the X window system and everything.
ARD doesn't seem to play nice with this, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong...

Anyone have any experience with 10GigE switches/cards for Mac or PC? Small workgroup type stuff, 24 ports would be plenty here.

My multi-million dollar tech infrastructure expansion project proposal just got funded. (Which will probably assist quite a bit in converting me from a full-time contractor to permanent staff).
Now I'm writing lengthy emails to my bosses about why several hundred thousand dollars should be re-allocated from tape backups to disk-to-disk, but nobody believes me (yet). Go figure.

For everyone complaining about Apple's MobileMe, I can assure you all my company's Exchange ActiveSync is having many difficulties as well.

Camera authorizations (which I have) required here, but no use of cell phone cameras (auth is for, well, professional cameras. I use a department owned Nikon D2X most the time but have blanket auth for any department owned or rented equiptment).
Basically, you can own/carry a cell with camera, but if you get caught actually using the cell camera, you're in trouble.

My company now actually supports personally owned iPhones via Exchange ActiveSync.
After you get the signature of your supervisor, the department vice president, and a director of IT, and a minimal charge to the department. Which I'm currently trying to get.

Push email now working. Receive email in less than 2 seconds, and quicker than my Mail client on my Mac.
Niiiiiiiiice.

Push IMAP and contacts does not seem to be working for me yet. Configured it for MobileMe, but eh, not working yet.
Got contacts to Sync with MobileMe once, just not auto updating as it is set to do.

Found one of these little buggers in my office today. Hidden well.

I know the responsible group of people. Very smart, programmers & 3d artists. Taking suggestions of ways to get them back. Long lasting & hard to pin back on me would be a good thing.

Also... a gaming Swiffie for the GeForce 8800GT. Got one to replace my Radeon 1900XT in my first-gen MacPro.
Radeon = wind tunnel
GeForce = can't hear it over the (very quiet) air conditioner.
Faster too, of course.

KSEA
KSEA players often seek out PVP in a game, but they are looking to socialize with and form alliances with other players who are interested in doing the same. They often seek out guilds or clans that organize formal PVP events, or work on group strategies and tactics.
Breakdown: Achiever 26.67%, Explorer 33.33%, Killer 80.00%, Socializer 60.00%

Ah, simple accounting error.

I have to call the (older, suddenly higher paying) staffing company ASAP tomorrow morning and get ahold of the accountant. They have no reason not to tell me if HR suddenly re-leveled my rate. They don't know about the switch of staffing companies yet (I think). If it was an HR move, I have to get them to tell me who exactly in HR made the change so I can meet with them.
Or, it's all just a mist

Extra money makes me nervous. 300$ extra just showed up on my paycheck. Did I get a raise? Nobody told me... What's this for?
Why does this make me nervous? This comes the same week that the department finance person / administrator insisted that I change staffing companies (at my old, normal rate). I was given a fairly specific reason they were changing staffing companies, not related to my rat

There's some law, somewhere that if you're turned down based on whatever in the background check you can request to see what was in the check.
Don't know more details, all the checks done on me didn't go into much. I don't think there is much that can disqualify me for working for an entertainment company though. One time they called my boss (check done 2 years after I was already working there

Yes. And it's awesome.
Oh, and...
Command-Return goes to windowed mode.
I admire how they've done loading creatures. The data structure is hidden in .png previews of the creations. You can drag and drop the .png's onto the window from the finder to load them! Pretty damn Mac-like for being cider.

Physical access all bets are off.
Restart with OS CD - can reset password.
Open up the box, take out some ram, reset PRAM 3 times to kill OpenFirmware passwords.
Yeah. Just sayin'

Heh, timely video, as today she can get married in (my home state) California, if she so wishes.

Yeah the new Accounts Pane is great.
Also, when making a new user there are some new options - including making a new group (with a great interface to assign users to it!). Huzzah!
Dr. Strangelove: Lol, I've done that.
