I saw both those commercials over the weekend while watching football. I found them both pretty amusing.

Regarding Joe the Plumber, I wonder what percentage of two-person plumbing shops clear $250k for the owner. Probably a tiny fraction.

The weirdest moment of the second debate was when McCain said: "Now, how -- what's -- what's the best way of fixing it? Nuclear power. Sen. Obama says that it has to be safe or disposable or something like that." He said it with such distain that I burst out laughing. Obama wants nuclear power to be safe? What a wanker!
And stan, you watched that four times? You need to get out more!

At this point, if I had to choose between a third Bush/Cheney term or a McCain/Palin term, I'd take Bush/Cheney, no question.

The 2004 election was very different from this one. Courtesy the Princeton Election Consortium, here's the polling data from 2004, expressed in expected electoral votes for Kerry:
Here's the same for this year for Obama:
Kerry was behind from late August onward; Obama has basically been ahead the whole time.

We'd like to do some ziplining/kayaking. (My wife won't do open ocean kayaking, but I don't think that will be a problem.) Is that something we should book in advance?

We're already booked, thanks.
I take it you had a good time?

stan, you realize that McCain has given up on Michigan, right? I think it's gonna get very ugly for McCain before this thing is over.
As for the debate, Bible Spice about met my expectations. She came across as extremely scripted, but not completely witless. But she also came across as snide and condescending, and she way, way, way overplayed the "Ah shucks" stuff. She's no Reagan, not by a long

I expect Bible Spice (h/t to John Cole for that) to exceed expectations in her debate, and for McCain to get a small bump in the polls as a result. She can't possibly do as poorly as she did with Couric, can she?
I don't expect her to fall on her sword, either. If she had that much self-awareness, she never would have accepted the nomination in the first place.

This has to be one of the worst answers I've ever seen given by a politician. Can anyone explain what she's saying to me? It seems like Palin is stringing together a bunch of different talking points on different subjects.
My favorite part is when she looks down at her notes and then says "Oh, it's got to be all about job creation too!" But I'm still not sure what the bailout plan has to do with

BTW, McCain's statement (which he has made several times) that Alaska produces 20% of the US's energy supply is wrong. As far as I can tell, Alaska produces about 3% (mostly in the form of oil) of the energy that the US consumes. I think that what he is trying to say (or maybe, to be less charitable, lying about) is that about 20% of the oil produced in the US comes from Alaska. That's about 8% o

Does anyone else find that podcast syncing is broken in the more recent iTunes? No matter what setting I use (all unplayed, all new, most recent new, least recent new), iTunes syncs all podcasts to my iPod (30 GB classic iPod). Anyone else see anything like this?

Did some googling. Turns out it's a networking thing. I was able to make it go away by removing/readding and/or inactivating/reactivating airport and bluetooth networking in the network control panel.

So I had cause to open up console.app and under "All Messages" I see the following being written every 5 seconds:
9/9/08 10:36:32 AM SystemUIServer[143] Error: ACInterfaceGetPower() called with invalid interface
Any clues?

Nope, in fact the first thing I did was install Leopard, (erase and install). I first noticed the problem when running system update and it claimed it wasn't connected to the internet. I've since installed Office 2008, that's the only thing other than Leopard on the machine.
I had it sitting on my desk, idling. Then I put it to sleep. When I woke it, ethernet was dead again. Maybe if I can find

It dropped off ethernet again after sitting for a while. I could see en1 (which is the ethernet port, airport is en0) via ifconfig. The network control panel claimed the cable was not connected. Playing with the settings in the advanced pane didn't seem to do anything, nor did turning off IPv6. Rebooting fixed it, for now anyway. Other suggestions?

Any suggestions on troubleshooting the ethernet port on a MacBook Pro? I recently inherited said machine, and it occasionally has trouble connecting. Once ethernet didn't even show up under "About this Mac." Another time it just thought the cable wasn't connected (despite using multiple cables and multiple network jacks). It's still under AppleCare, so that's not an issue, but I'd like to better

Palin's got a lot of political problems:
She's a former member of the fringe Alaska Independence Party.
She was one of the founding directors of a 527 group for Ted Stevens.
She hired Stevens' former chief-of-staff to work as a lobbyist while she was mayor of Wasilla. He's the one who brought in $27 million in pork to her little town while she was mayor.
Contrary to what she said when she was

I think I'll be using Filemaker to access the database from my end once I have everything set up.
But the university server that this will be running on only supports asp.net and classic asp, and sqlserver, mysql, and oracle as databases. So my choices are a bit limited.
