Hi guys. Went 10 km into Germany on Saturday and then saw this;by tliet - Spork Central
Hm, wouldn't a lot of the problems be solved if the First past the post system would be changed. I've noticed that in non partisan systems the crazy is a lot less. Still crazy, sure enough, but less.by tliet - Spork Central

It's been said many times already, but I think this is conclusive proof that the terrorists have won. When the supreme court has to come up with logic that would not look out of place in 1939 Germany I don't think there's any way back. At least, I'm having trouble imagining new legislation that will try to repair this. I don't think I'll visit the US ever again I'm afraid. Which is unfortunateby tliet - Spork Central
Have a good one, all.by tliet - Spork Central
Took some pictures for my photography course of some objects in my neighbourhood. When it was built in the late 1920s, they placed some well known figures on the bridges.by tliet - Spork Central
Hmm, never heard of super tasters before, interesting. Tony, my favourite drink is Ketel 1 jenever (dutch gin) with coke and if I'm abroad it's gin and coke (which causes some strange looks sometimes). Indeed, perfect if you're a sweet tooth.by tliet - Spork Central
i/o bottleneck has been solved in my machine by the ssd ;-Dby tliet - Spork Central
What I meant was that for the target group (not servers like Alan is proving) OS X is more than fine. And it's acceptable that these days, 4 Gbyte is the absolute minimum, at least in my opinion. What I've also been saying over the past couple of years, that OS X is no magic bullet when it comes to security. Most of the perceived security has been because of the relative obscurity in the greateby tliet - Spork Central
One other thing that shows the Mac OS X is just another operating system; http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2012/04/new-analysis-backs-half-million-mac-infection-estimate.ars I think it's now safe to say that OS X doesn't have any magic capability to prevent getting infected, the user will always be the weak point.by tliet - Spork Central
To the user the OS might not be that different (although this is also debatable), but over the years I would guess that the OS has gained about 1500 new features (and also dropped some major legacy technology on the way). Of course, Apple is willing to sell you a new machine every few years, but I don't think Lion is a bloated OS like Vista was when it first came out. But maybe that's just my oby tliet - Spork Central
Aha! Learned something today. I have an app that supports it; Mindnode Pro. Pretty cool:by tliet - Spork Central
DPBD Yes, I gave up on mail.app. When I have e-mails missing in an Exchange mailbox I think the product is unreliable.by tliet - Spork Central
Hm, how can I use versioning without TimeMachine? Serious question, as I don't see versions in the file system? And I dunno about Camino and its memory usage, but it seems a bit rich. This is my Mac with all processes. And this is just my own processes. I tried FreeMemory once, but it ended only in minutes of beachballing with OS X taking up most of the 'freed' RAM within minutes again.by tliet - Spork Central
dpbd; Daniel. TimeMachine is for versioning...by tliet - Spork Central
Indeed, I'm quite baffled by this. Sure the initial versions of Mac OS X were slow and used (compared to Mac OS 9) 'too much' RAM. But can you imagine Mac OS 9 doing the things that you're regularly doing now on the Mac? This 4 y/o MacBook Pro that I'm typing this on screams with Lion. It's zippier than zippy and runs Windows XP with Parallels faster than on my subnotebook that I've been using iby tliet - Spork Central
Gmail can be configured as a Microsoft Exchange (ActiveSync) service on the iPhone and in my experience it works absolutely brilliant.by tliet - Spork Central
I do like Lion, even though it has some issues. The regular updates seemend to have slowed down, haven't they? Tony, remember the time when Mac OS 9.2.2 was king? 128 Mb RAM was plenty. Then came Mac OS X along. Have you looked back?by tliet - Spork Central
Good points Johnny. I was more thinking along the lines of service contracts (to milk out customers) but that article is indeed a very good breakdown of Apple's strategy. Thanks.by tliet - Spork Central
There's definitely something up with Lion's memory usage, I think it's becoming more like iOS. http://tidbits.com/article/12398 Also, there's no 'free memory' under OS X (or UNIX for that matter). I believe the OS takes every bit of RAM to optimise for speed. As for the upgrade, I would actually do a fresh install. It worked absolute wonders for me. Last question; did you do an in-place upgraby tliet - Spork Central
The question is, how much more households are there left to sell new devices to. When I look around, almost everyone I know (and that includes numerous people who swore never to buy or use an Apple device) has bought one or multiple iPods/iPhones/iPads. Macs are tougher sells though, people tend to hang on to Windows. So, what is Apple's perspective on sustained growth?by tliet - Spork Central
Daniel, How much RAM does your Mac have? My gf wife is complaining that her MacBook Pro with 4 Gb gets awfully slow and I also had problems, until I swapped the HD for an SSD. My MacBook Pro has 6 Gb RAM and since the SSD I've had no problems with slow downs. Also, did you upgrade, or do a clean install of Lion?by tliet - Spork Central
Apple seems to have succumbed to the pressure of consumer organisations in the EU as they have now published this page which states that EU consumer law with the 2 year warranty also applies to Apple's products (and 3rd party products you may have bought from Apple). Wow. just wow. It only took about 5 years and untold numbers of AppleCare packs which were completely redundant. You see, the 2 yby tliet - Spork Central
Do you really believe the world will end in 2012?by tliet - Spork Central
RIM is ceding the consumer market and focusing on the business market. http://www.businessweek.com/ap/2012-03/D9TQDUEO3.htm Hm, I thought they had already lost the business market and were clinging on the 10-15 year olds who are addicted to the free 'pinging'. At least, that was the case in Holland about 2 years back. They have a mighty challenge in front of them if they don't want to end up liby tliet - Spork Central
Performed open hearth surgery on my MacBook Pro 'early 2008' and installed a Samsung 830 SSD 64 Gb as a boot disk and a Hitachi 640 Gb disk in place of the SuperDrive. Pretty satisfied now. I just saved myself 1000 euros buying a new MBP. It feels about twice as fast, if not faster.by tliet - Spork Central
Indeed, Daniel. It's Dutch with a Flemish accent. They were talking about a nice 'couple' and talking to the director of the programme to try and get a better look when the peleton would pass...by tliet - Spork Central
