Well, why not? this is a community, after all.

Turns out that Matt Senate, who's trying to set this up for a PLoS hackathon, has already met those guys! And I thought tliet might know them because of the .nl domain (joke). But on short notice, we might just use a hosted wiki page people can toss up their ideas and needs for teams.

Thanks!

Ah, that's a neat trick. It'd actually be nice if Apple sold Lion on one of those...

What a journey.
yeah, I have a USB Lion installer here I use(d)

They do Tony. I don't think you can get Lion on a DVD these days.

Ah, good to know...

I heard that you can burn the disk image from the Lion download from the Apple Store; you have to "Show Package Contents" and drill down to find the .dmg file. I haven't tried it, myself.

In the link that I posted above is also a link to the instructions how to burn a DVD.

Well, if anyone burns a DVD they want to send my way... .

Speak of the devil... the hard drive on my wife's MacBook Pro died this morning. Tliet's instructions for making a Lion thumb drive work fine, but when I use it to boot the Mac and run Disk Utility I can see a SATA device, with no volumes beneath it. I'll take it to our local Mac shop, but I don't think they'll be able to do much. I think it's still under AppleCare, but we upgraded the hard drive a few years back and I don't imagine Apple will want responsibility for that. We could buy a new drive, but the machine was behaving a little erratically before this (in ways that do not seem to trace directly to the hard disk), so we're contemplating options.

My first instinct was to hold off for the new MBP's rumored in April, but my wife is as hard-disk obsessed as I am. She takes photos of EVERYTHING (PG-Rated) and never deletes them. More than 20,000. (I sure hope her Time Machine backup worked. I have a Firewire backup for her from October, but all of her family photos from her mother's last days and service were only backed up in Time Machine.) The storage problem keeps her from a 13" MBA, which would otherwise be perfect.

We're left with either buying a new drive for a problematic 3-year old machine, or a new (current) MBP, before they can switch to SSD. We'll wait until we hear from the repair shop (Mac-o-rama, fantastic place for Mac folks in Reno) to make our decision.

I hope the Time Machine data is good...

Ugh, JW, I hope your Time Machine is okay. That would be a terrible loss.

If you can wait until the new ones ship, the refurb price of the current MBPs will probably drop (although, if the new ones are SSD-only, I expect demand for refurbs of the current ones will be quite high).

The hard drive in my mom's old iMac (white Core 2 Duo) also just died. Good thing we plugged in an external drive just for Time Machine. She's interested in getting an iPad, and I'd agree that it's a good fit, except that like your wife, she takes thousands of photos, 99% of which she doesn't look at again. (Got her an Eye-Fi which only created a new problem - she never deletes photos off the memory card so it just fills up. Though the new ones automatically delete photos that have been downloaded.)

iPhoto for iPad makes it more feasible, and mmmaybe the 64GB iPad will do, but I'm not sure that it would. Here's where I get leery of giving up the file system all together.

John,

Is the HD clicking? If you can place the drive in an enclosure and connect it via fierwire or usb, you should be able to use testdisk to create a disk image of the partition in question, provided it is not encrypted.

I used this to successfully restore a dead HD last week.

once you get the stuff off the HD, sending it in for warranty is not a bad process. WD has a pretty good online RMA process. I replaced the HD that broke for $8 shipping to the repair center.

johnny k,

set the eyefi to upload to flickr or mobileme automatically, then she can browse them all on the ipad.

The drive does not click. Mac-o-Rama will rescue the data for me. I'm thinking of buying a new drive through them and letting them backup the old drive to the new. My wife will still probably get a new machine, but it would be nice to have the old one in runnable if flaky state.

(Proud Alumn of Flaky State.)

Hmm, that's a thought, Remy. Seems lame to have to upload to a site to move her photos between devices on the same network. And they do have to be downloaded to her iPad. Wonder if iCloud will learn how to play nice with Eye-Fi, though. Eye-Fi will send right to the iPad in direct mode, but that requires opening the Eye-Fi app and possibly choosing the card as a hotspot. The ideal workflow involves no action on her part - that's the whole reason I got her the Eye-Fi in the first place.

Maybe I need to get her an iPhone for photos too.

Hey you Insta-dorks! How is a non-iOS dude supposed to reply/comment to these things?
I got this from Jaguar ... http://instagr.am/p/ISfjBlGO37/... but I see no way for me to reply.
No Instagram app in MAC APP STORE, either. What the WHAT!?

tliet – March 21, 2012 02:28PM Reply Quote
iPhone only, there's not even an Android app, which causes some hate in that camp when someone tweets an Instagram pic.
