DPBD:
Anyone with back-end dev experience have the free time to answer a few questions off-board? I'm trying to learn 1) what would be necessary to build for a web app (CSS, Javascript) to communicate to the server what users have done on their own screens, do some logic, and have that calculation change what's presented to the next user of the web app and 2) is that possible?

Depending on what exactly you mean by "what users have done on their own screens", yes it's possible. Every event can trigger a Javascript function that can asynchronously report back to the server.

What a journey.
Ever since updating to Safari 5.1 in snow leopard a couple days ago, I get "Safari cannot connect to server" for youtube, google maps (so far). New, unwelcome behavior. I have adblock, and ghostery extensions for blocking stuff. But even when I turn those off, I get that.
I will be googling (regular google works at least) to try and find a solution. Other browsers (FF) work okay. Safari 5.1 works fine from other Mac Mini, as well.

Hideously Unnatural
DNS chicanery is what I'd blame.
Make sure your DNS servers on that machine are pointed at your router's DNS forwarder, and that your router's DNS is using fast servers.
I'm a fan of Google's DNS servers, and OpenDNS servers, though there is a good argument these days for using your ISP's DNS servers - if a service like Youtube, which has caching agreements with most large ISPs, sees that you have a regional DNS, you'll get a more local server than otherwise.

What a journey.
Thanks Tom. This Mac is pointed to 8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3; but not my router's DNS settings. Might go change that now.
But I was reading this and I can't seem to follow what the fix is.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3245104?start=0&tstart=0
My output is this, which does not appear to me to be suspect.
main$ cat /etc/hosts
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
mains-Mac-mini:~ main$
On similar Mac Mini where this all is ok/working, I get this. Seems the same. (shrug)
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
I also do not see a copy of flashplayer.pkg or similar on my drive.
So, still looking.

Ok. I turned off Little Snitch and it works. Not sure which entry is blocking what yet.
Sorry for the trouble. I'll see what I can track down.

I'm continuing to have trouble with my Airport installation and was hoping you could help.
At present it is as follows.
Level One
1. FiOS n router to outside world.
2. Time Capsule with Ethernet to Mac Pro, to FiOS n router, and to Trendnet 500Mbps Powerline adapter
3. Airport Extreme (not so Extreme, old model) acting as WiFi-to-Ethernet bridge with Ethernet to Color Laserprinter, USB to label printer. Stuck in closet.
Level Two
1.Trendnet Powerline adapter connected via Ethernet to new generation Airport Extreme's WAN port that also has Ethernet to xBox, Mac Mini home media server, Blu-Ray player.
Level Two is also where my bedroom is, on the other side of the wall from the new generation Airport Extreme.
My optimum config would be that you could join one network—call it "Molerat"—and your laptop would pick the base station to use according to your distance from it.
Not only is that not happening, our laptops are not joining the 5ghz network on level two. Or at least they weren't. I went into the settings and set up a separate name for the 5 Ghz network. Now they see that and that's fine. But that adds more networks to the mix. Confusion ensues. Explaining to the wife will be difficult.
What to do?

What device is handing out the IP addresses?

The goddamned FiOS Router.

Is there anything special going on with the FiOS router? Does it need to pass through traffic or anything? My first thing to do in these sort of instances is to plug everything into your airport and let that create it's own wireless network and IP subnet for the house. This can cause a problem with double-NAT with some setups, but I have it working elsewhere (although without the home powerline adatpers).
Goes like this
-FiOS router --> Time Capsule WAN port
-Time Capsule (DHCP) In the Airport Utility under internet connection, choose share a public IP address. Get the IP address from FiOS using DHCP. Under DHCP on the Time Capsule, make sure it is using a different IP range than the FiOS. If Fios is handing out 192.x subnet, change Time Capsule to 172.x or 10.x. Under the wireless section, choose create a wireless network, b/g compatible, WPA2 personal and set the network password.
- On all other airports, choose bridge mode under internet but create the same wireless network, including password and WPA2 Personal.
- Since your FiOS router is now isolated from your internal subnet, you can create a separate wireless network on the FiOS router (assuming it has wireless built-in) and give that to guests. Guests will only see the internet and none of the porn on your MacPro.
- If the home powerline adpaters receive IP addresses, you may want to make them static. Each additional airport should have it's own static address as well (outside of your DHCP range). Make sure you update your DHCP lease to something tolerable, like 3 or 4 days.

That won't work. I want my guests to see the pr0n. Is there some way that they can see it when they log on by default?
I will give all that a try.

In that case, you can just give them the wifi password you have with the airports and they will see everything. You can turn off wireless on the FiOS entirely.

A friend of mine passed along a .ipa iphone app file (sadly, not with an IPA beer) -- but it seems like one has to jailbreak to get it onto an iPhone?

Anyone have experience with OmniFocus? I've come to the conclusion I could use a task manager and have heard good things about it (and like the idea of supporting a longtime Apple-only developer). But it will be three figures to put it on both my Mac and my iPhone, which is not trivial.

Haven't tried OmniFocus, so I cannot comment on it. But you've tried Wunderlist already I presume?

Jeff,
Not that I have any experience with GTD apps (it's on my list of things to get to), but from what I gather from listening to people like David Allen and the Back to Work podcast, it doesn't matter so much what task management system you use, as long as you use it.

So, I don't remember changing any settings in iTunes or Image Capture, but now I cannot use the latter to import photos taken on the former to my laptop. Image Capture just doesn't see any photos in the iPhone (which does register as a device); the Rescan button is greyed out. Same problem if I try to download the photos via iPhoto -- it sees the phone but doesn't see any of the photos on it, nor gives the option to rescan. I can take and see photos on my phone.
Ideas?

Remy,
I tried your advice out at long last. Again, my goal is to have one network so that if I walk from my downstairs office to my upstairs bedroom the networks will hand off from one to the other seamlessly. It works at work (which I don't configure) so why not at home?
It did indeed hand off, but the upstairs airport extreme handed my laptop to the 2.4 ghz, not 5 ghz connection. I don't see how to access the 5 ghz connection although the network is set to 802.11n only (5Ghz) - 802.11n only (2.4Ghz).
Any thoughts?

Do you use the same network name for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks? I give mine different names and delete the 2.4 GHz network from my list of saved passwords. My laptops stay on the 5 GHz network when I move around.
