CNet had
an interesting take on this yesterday. Specifically:
Quote
On Sunday morning HP made progress with its shopping cart--the site delivered 404 errors, which are a step up from database outages. HP spun this as a case of overwhelming demand. That's fair enough, but HP also sells IT infrastructure--adaptive infrastructure to be specific. Why didn't HP throw more servers at the problem? How about a few database admins? How about some cloud capacity to handle the demand spike?
In the big picture, HP could have turned this TouchPad liquidation lemon into lemonade. HP could have used its internal cloud to handle the spikes. If HP handled the traffic well, it could have spun a whitepaper out of it to pitch its wares. In the end, HP could have highlighted how its data centers saved the day even amid TouchPad adversity.

Ouch, from the CNET article: BetaNews' Joe Wilcox argued that tablet pricing is ruined after HP's fire sale. I'm inclined to agree.

Gruber,
in a response to an idiotic Arrington blog post, points out that while, yes, it is possible to sell $500 hardware for $100 and move a lot of units, it is very difficult to make money from this model. Apple makes a small percentage of their profit from the iTMS and quite a bit from hardware sales of iOS devices. I don't think that reversing this model makes economic sense.
It’s easy to sell a bunch of $500 tablets for $100. That doesn’t mean you’d sell a lot of $200 tablets for $200. And even if they did sell, it’d be for little-to-no profit. Apple’s 30 percent cut of app sales is a nice side business, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to their hardware sales. App advertising is an even lower margin business.

What's most amazing is that Gruber's long had a -- I won't call it friendship, but an amity with -- Arrington.
No, what's most amazing (note: Arrington's idiocy and lack of adding value to anything he touches is a given) is the nature of Arrington's responses in the comments to anyone who disagrees with him. This from some libertarian "customers who don't get good value will leave and kill a company". I swear, it's 12-year-old level stuff, if one wanted to be insulting to 12-year-olds.
WHY does anyone support techcrunch?

I follow MG Siegler's tumblr so I get the only good TechCrunch articles. Generally I hate everything about startup culture so I'd otherwise stay away from it even if Arrington wasn't such a Dvorak.
Seconding Cloudscout - I will pay for two Pre 3's if two of you happen to snag me one. WANT. Am I reading you correctly in saying that the Pre 3 did briefly go on sale but quickly sold out, or did just the page change with no units going on sale?

The page changed without any units going on sale.
I find it interesting that the new message on that page no longer mentions any impending price reduction.

Odd to see techno-lust from the outside. The shiny isn't calling me this time. And I liked WebOS, or at least as much as one can like it without ever actually using it. The MacBook Air may have sated my technological passions.

This is more of a "I wanna see how it works" thing. I have no intention of actually moving to the WebOS platform but it's fun to tinker and learn how it ticks.

This is more of a 'I want a good, unlocked smartphone for a price I can afford' since I roll no-contract. No lust, though I also liked WebOS as much as you can without ever using it. Hackability is a plus.

Here's the latest update on their website:

Update Thur 25th 9pm :
No new orders can be taken for this Product at this time. No change expected to that position before 31st August
Next Update:
Customers who have an existing order with us will be contacted directly by our customer service team on Friday 26th in relation to the status of their order. We will contact you - please can we ask you to be patient and await contact by us. Please do not ring or email us as this will only further delay the process. Timing of contact will not in any way affect the status of your order.
We, at Palm Eurostore, are continuing to pursue all options to try to obtain Pre3 product. We do not, however, expect to have any further information in this respect before Wed 31st Aug. Any new information will appear here first.
Customer Service staff will not have any further information - it will be communicated directly here on this page.
Latest rumors are implying that HP is working out a deal to sell their entire stock of these phones directly to the carriers which would then be tied to a contract.

Now it sounds like there will be no sale pricing:

So I just got called by PalmEurostore.
They offered to refund me in full, or ship me one Pre3 at full price. They're going to ship it today.
So that's it folks, it's official. There will be no fire sale, at least not from Palm, and no bundle. They seem to be fulfilling orders on first come first serve. FYI I ordered on Tuesday 17th.
Combine this with
this statement by DataVis:

Lastly, with regard to more units after the committed batch. We believe we will get 1 last shot of them as HP is building more. YES they do cost more than $80-$90 and everyone that HP sold for $99 was a loss. You will get your item AT THE CHEAPER PRICE YOU PAID. The next batch will be considerably more. We do not know the higher price, but please also keep that in mind when complaining.
It sounds to me like HP has changed their mind about exiting the WebOS business altogether. I mean, why else would they be manufacturing MORE devices?

They may be running through their inventory of stocked parts. Remember, they originally expected these devices to sell well and probably contracted for parts and assembly on that basis.
I just don't think that the guy running HP wants to be in the hardware business anymore, even PC's. I think that they best that you can hope for as far as WebOS devices go is a sale or spin-off of that division. Like Steve was originally going to do with Newton.

Anyone want to check out Fab.com? Have an invite that will give you $10 credit when you join (expires in 24 hours).

I bought a
Glif for my brother on it for a good price. A buddy of mine sold a bunch of his designed objects, seemed to do well. Lots of top-notch furniture for much cheaper than normal (but still too much for me).
