Well, it may be gone by Monday. It first appeared after a big storm in the 17th century, perhaps the sea will take it back now. My niece is fleeing slightly inland to her sister's apartment, which is in a merely dangerous location rather than a suicidal one.

John,
were you aware that Steve Jobs dad is in your town and industry?

I had no idea that he remained in the country, let alone built a career here. More power to him.

I've been back east for six years now.

So… we made it through. First real hurricane, not just scraggly ass tail end. Thanks for the wishes, Dave.

It seemed ok so we went to sleep. Woke up with howling wind (eerily little rain) at 4am. Holy shit those trees were moving. And there are lots of tall ones on that side of the house. I was terrified. Wife was confused by being woken up but put up with me. We moved to an aerobed we had set up on the floor below where the kids sleep. Sunday morning I noticed one tree had its top taken off. It landed on my wood pile. Had it gone the other way there would have been no power for anyone around here.

Cleaned up the yard a bit. Casually went down to the basement midday. Should have gone sooner. 1- 1 1/2" of water. Yikes! The sump pump stalled for some reason (clogged? float got stuck?). I got it going easily enough. I'm bothered by why it stopped but it seems to work fine now. The next twelve hours were spent cleaning out the stuff the water destroyed and vacuuming up the remaining water.

Going to buy a new pump since this one shouldn't have stopped. Any recommendations? Plenty of folks in town have no power so I'm thinking battery backup and multiple redundancy is a must. Basement Watchdog maybe??

Uggh. We had our sump pump break once. I installed a new one (prayed before my feet touched the water - hoping electricity would not kill me) while the water was rising.
After that, the next day or so, I installed this.

Been absolutely a lifesaver ever since, too.

Good luck with your water/basement.

I was at the Super Target in West Carmel, Indiana last night, and the shelves were virtually bare of staples like water, bread, milk, orange juice, and breakfast cereal. Evidently, people here spent the weekend stocking up for the hurricane.

Another reason not to venture to the northside. (LOL)
I'd expect that logic would go over more likely down here on the southside.

Glad things weren't worse, Baha! If the highlights were the wife being cranky at being woken and firewood automatically placing itself on your pile, you live a charmed life.

My family is safe. At least the gunman had the courtesy to spare the state the expense of a trial. Asshole.

Safe here. One benefit of unemployment is that IHOP, particularly one 30mi south, is off the menu. I've been seeing that the shooting is being reported across the country, and current reports are implying the service members who were shot might have been targeted. Too soon to know if that's just speculation because of them being in uniform at the time or what.

I like my independent ISP (sonic.net). Great service. Good prices. Lts of communication from tech support. Unfortunately, they still need to rely on ATT wiring to get a lot of things working. Finally, after six weeks, I have internet in my new apartment.

In Vermont for the weekend to visit my mom, I stopped in at Small Dog (the Burlington Store) shortly after landing yesterday. What a great store.
