Right by the lake. Same job, but clients in Oakland means the commute from San Jose is not fun. I hear good things about the alley.
I'm out of la for two years now. The harlows have been holding down the fort for spark in southern cal.

Lots of talk in my circle of friends about this. It's awful, and there is plenty of blame to go around.
What I think is surprising is that while folks who rig these kinds of freestanding structures can, should and usually do the load calculations for them, there (as far as I know) is not any professional or regulatory requirement to do so.
The people that engineer these structures are usually not schooled or licensed as engineers, and I don't think there are regulations to require that.
Kind of scary from my perspective because my company flies all sorts of heavy shit over the heads of people.

What a journey.
A guy on TV that works stages counted/added up the 'stuff on top', subwoofers, etc.. He said he thought it looked overloaded on one/some(?) of the cross members. I was only HALF paying attention to his discussion, in all fairness.

Whole lotta shakin' going on. 5.8 earthquake in VA, felt in DC, NY. Pentagon evacuated, parts of Manhattan (?!) according to initial CNN blog. Also felt in Cleveland and Toronto (!!!).

Found where it's at!
So did my building! It first seemed like a VERY heavy cart was being rolled down the hall. Once the side-to-side motion started, then I knew what was going on. A couple of more seconds, and stuff would have been falling off walls, desks, etc. The bridge carrying US 301 across the Potomac River is still closed (causing hate and discontent at my work, as that's a commuter route for many), and there's been damage to the National Cathedral in DC. I'm about 50 miles from the epicenter.
This apparently was the most powerful tremblor recorded ever in the central VA seizmic zone. A 2.8 aftershock just happened, and we did not feel it.

Had a nice long weekend at Possum Kingdom Lake near Dallas, courtesy of our proud Texan friends (Right off the plane, an SMS: "Welcome to the greatest state of Texas"). My first time in Texas since I was a kid. Really enjoyed it. Gave watersports a shot, with little success. Got my Whataburger fix in as well.

Best of luck to Soup, Bahamut, johnny k, and others up east. Irene is going to be anything from a huge inconvenience to a catastrophe. For us, I'm figuring the same impact as Isabel from a few years ago: lots of trees down and no power for a week.

My family and in-laws are scattered in a wide arc from coastal Florida through coastal North Carolina and coastal Virginia ending up with Manhattan and northern Long Island. I'm just hoping to end the weekend with the same number of kin that I start it with.

And I just found out that one of my nieces lives on "Willoughby Spit" near Norfolk. And she's not even a Willoughby. There is, or was, a seafood chain back east that had a map of the Chesapeake Bay on the back of it. I always used to look at Willoughby Spit, an entire peninsula named after me. I never dreamed I'd have relatives living on it, let alone getting washed off of it by a hurricane.
