Wow, what do you have to pay to get to drive all those sweet cars?? I'd be scared to death. I once drove a Viper... way too big and clumsy, chipped a side skirt on a curb.

The car makes have stands setup and much contracted staff for test drives. Drivers sign a form, usually on a tablet (iPad-ish).
As I stated to a friend who also drove some, if I were to READ what I SIGNED, it would likely DISSUADE me from actually having the above-reported SHEER EXCITEMENT I had. Ignorance was and is bliss on this, and all involved came away unscathed.

So, no fee for the fun...until or unless one damages or injures.

I took out the Porsche 911 (new design, nice new 7 speed transmission) Friday. My driver guide is from Medellin, Colombia. We hit it off, and he took me the long route. At one point I crossed a bridge over to a neighboring 'island', did a u-turn, and could see the entire length of that same bridge back the other way was totally open, devoid of any other vehicles -- first and foremost COPS... You know where this is heading --> so, before the midway point of that short bridge back, I let it rip to 110 mph ... mere seconds. Beautiful machine. I told him the next week I was going to confer with my wife to ascertain whether or not the kids need college. :)

Sunday, against all odds he bumped into me in the large attending crowd. He was done instructing for drives, as it's too busy to do those on show day, so he was dressed comfortably and enjoying the show like everyone else. He got my attention to tell me how much he enjoyed our drive. I'm sure he had dozens of drivers that day. It was nice to share a moment with him.

Me with the Ferrari 456 (Italia) Spider. Saturday before official show. I was wandering around where all the workers were busy prepping for the show. It's an all-night/round-the-clock effort. But surprisingly it comes down and disperses very quickly.

side note: I am not a shoe guy but for some strange reason other guys' shoes really catch my eye at Amelia. shrug.

Amelia Island is open to public. Of the roughly four day event, only Sunday of the actual Concours costs $50 admission for 12 and above in age. There are no test drives during the show/Sunday. I drove cars on Friday and Saturday.
And the makes (Jag, Porsche, M-B, Range Rover, Lambo, SRT, etc.) are there to show you their new cars and let you drive them. Again... anyone (21 years old)...but some build a waiting list greater than their capability.
All I did was get on the drive lists, signed my life away (should I have damaged, injured, killed, ticketed, jailed.....), and smiled ear to ear.

Here is the 911 I took out. back, view from inside while driving, and front/nose. Note the red 911 in front of me. I ran up his backside and lit his fuse. He then started to race. I did not give chase. But still hit 110 in the process.

Here you can see how they line up the cars, people manage the drivers/customers, and such. They are helping me get in (help with stuff in my hands), and give me the 10 second 'how to' drive it speech. You can see the Jag hospitality stand where they sign you up and you can wait for the next car to come up to drive it. The guy in the tan pants, blue jacket in front of the Lamborghini was the coordinator for Lambo. He was my BEST friend! ANYONE that gives me the keys to a Lambo to drive is my immediate, new best friend!

M-B has the largest presence. The convertible I am driving there is the SLK 55 AMG. The coupe/hardtop is the C63 with purported top speed of 208 mph!! Go watch some youtube videos... it's like M-B's MUSCLE CAR. No finesse. Beast. Not my have, though. I loved the Jag XKR-S, a LOT. The Porsche is 'think it --> do it' easy and fast. Incredible, but almost too perfect. Anyway... I had FUN!

The AMG C63 from the MB site basically states it's the fastest MB made....sans one higher special package of the same car called the BLACK. (not a color, just a package name).

Wow, that looks like a fun event. I initially thought you could drive the car with a factory companion, but they actually gave you the keys and waved goodbye?

I would have waved goodbye and crossed three or four state lines in that bad boy...

Sorry, did not mean to make it seem that way. We had ride-alongs. Many of them are lower name racers/race car drivers who do this sort of stuff in their spare time to 'pay the bills' one person told me. Their main role is to direct you where to go, and to answer questions, assist if you need help driving it. Because these are some odd-driving power beasts.

Last year I thought that people just got to ride in the passenger seat of things like the Lambo. I was wrong. I tried MY DARNDEST to get seat time in the Veyron but was unable. Can't fault them, I mean it IS a $2 million car or thereabouts. (Might find a COUPON somewhere...lol)

I have a new BMW. 2011 335xi with performance package and M Sport. It's a rocket!

Saw a few Veyrons (one with a really poorly executed colorway: matte carbon hood spilling over onto grille -- looked like it had a replacement part waiting to be painted to match the grey body) and other Bugattis just walking through Beverly Hills last Sunday. When they're solo, they look cool, but if there are multiples, they start to look bleh and stodgy.

The woman I've been seeing for the last few weeks has a 2007 Mini Cooper S (with manual transmission), and she let me drive it today. What fun! My next car (probably a year off) will either be a hybrid or a manual--I miss driving a stick.

Baha, very nice!

It would not look totally off in this line up, don't you think?
