Tesla himself looked promising and we see where he ended up. ... receiving the Edison Award. What a slap in the face.

My mom is visiting, and I wanted to leave her with my car today, so my girlfriend (that sounds weird) let me borrow her 2006 Mini Cooper S for the commute downtown. Fun fun fun! It's actually no faster than my Acura, but it sure feels like a zippy little thing. My next car will have a manual transmission, for sure.

My Miata is the same way. It's not fast by any stroke of the imagination but it is REALLY fun to drive.

I love the MINI Cooper. I have never driven a Miata that I can recall.

Found where it's at!
Two snaps up on the Miata! I don't get to drive it much these days as it has become middle daughter's car.

Probably not pragmatic, but I like this Prius C's interior.
My first car had an all-white vinyl interior; an Olds 442. Loved the swivel bucket seats, too.

click right arrow or whatever to see the interior.

Oh, I just happened to start on this car because I sorted by low price. They have it on AutoTrader for like $2000 below sticker. Not unusual to find deals on there. Have no idea if anyone actually gets the deals. Yes, I used to work at a dealership.

Remind me, Bill, how old are your kids? 8^)

For me, a white interior would be, well, suboptimal.

Of course, it wouldn't be a white interior for long.

Hrm.

That first gen was a decent looking car. It really bugs me that they insisted on making it EXTREME-IN-YOUR-FACE-I'M-DRIVING-A-HYBRID.

Are you kidding? That Prius is UGLY. The current model looks like a four door Civic CRX - one of the best Hondas ever made. The old model, by contrast, looks like a low-rent Yaris sedan.

Speaking of which, I saw my first Honda CRZ in the supermarket parking lot yesterday. It reminded me how much I liked the CRX. And the fact that I was with my kids reminded me how completely impractical those cars were and are.

DPBD: I was never a big fan of the original Prius's styling--it was basically just a warmed-over Toyota Echo. But, Bill, I know you really liked your now-departed car, and this one looks like a really nice example; you should look into it.

I was never very keen on that design of the CRX either but I understand where you're coming from. The original Prius was very plain and that's what I liked about it. I felt that the almost utilitarian design paired well with the concept of it being built for economy. It looked "normal".

I like to joke that you can't spell "pretentious" without p, r, i, u and s. That's how I feel about all cars that are designed to push that LOOK-AT-ME-I'M-A-HYBRID style. Even the fact that the Prius has extra badges on it that say "Hybrid" seems redundant. Is there a non-hybrid version of the Prius?

I want to see carmakers stop pitching these things as out-of-the-ordinary. Cars with novel fuel economy features shouldn't be a separate segment of the market. They need to blend in.

I'm with you, CS, but a huge reason the Prius did so well is the image - both the obvious difference in style (why should it blend in? Why don't more cars look swoopy anyway?) and the active MPG/green leaves, etc on the dashboard. I think now it matters less as hybrids are a more proven commodity and better deal, and people don't have to be made to feel exceptional. But if you want to blend in with your eco-goodness, there's the Civic Hybrid.
