The old Datsun roadsters are catching my eye. Don't know bout 'lectrification of them. But I like the looks.

You know, I'm really, for some unknown reason, tempted by the Euro-version Ford Fiesta and Focus. Not that I could afford to buy, even if I sold my existing, old car. But what a difference from even 10 years ago for Ford!

The best buy in autos, imo, is the new Nissan Versa at $11,000.

It's cheap, I'll give you that. But I drove one a couple of months ago as a rental, and it was pretty awful.

Ron,
I think we can all agree the xm is the gold ring to reach for. But for the common man, the Versa should suffice. :)
The xm with its expert suspension, did great on those odd speed bump type things near Greenwich, for sure.
I can't find a photo of them, though. Oh well.

I was really unimpressed when I test-drove the Versa. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't pleasant either.

Did you drive the newly redesigned 2012? I would agree it won't knock your socks off, but it's a very affordable car.

So's a 1981 Buick Century.

I worked at a Buick dealer in 1981. Total crap.

But affordable crap (in 2011)!

Yeah, but the point of the Fiesta and Focus isn't cheap -- maybe I'm just getting into the "hot hatch" idea. These are supposed to be fun-to-drive, solid, reliable, and well-built. Note the differentiating factors from an '80s Buick.

Hm, I used to drive hot hatches, but am more into very well aged Mercedes cars these days. I know, not the greenest option. But, they are a hobby and I drive less than 10K miles per year with them.

The forthcoming (to the USofA) DIESEL Chevy Cruze might be a good balance. (Except for J-Will and his luddite 80s flashbacks. :) )

I wish they would do a diesel version of the Volt.

Diesel-electric or Diesel-Gas?

El Jeffe – August 18, 2011 01:34PM Reply Quote
What a journey.
The Volt-based Caddy Converj could make me overlook the diesel for the gas/petrol.

GM's head guy on this stuff says they are electron-agnostic: don't care where they get the electrons from as long as the economics are there. (I mentioned before... http://www.autolinedetroit.tv/show/1340/1 )

That is a sexy beast. The only electrons that would do that thing justice need to come from a turbine engine. Seriously. There were technical limitations that prevented Chrysler's turbine-engine experiments in the 60s from reaching a practical design but it would be perfect as a range extender and you can run it on anything... Gas, Diesel, Ethanol, Corn Oil, Jet Fuel, Tequila, whatever you have handy.
