So, when do you expect to see the next 21-slot G5 subnotebook with built-in antigravity? Or do you have other things to complain about regarding the Mac rum0rz press?

Sneakernet, yes, and also Time Machine--I back up my Air to an external USB drive. The latter use could be handled with an external dongle from the Thunderbolt port, I suppose; the former really couldn't (at least not conveniently).

Wired mouse (why bother with economically and environmentally wasteful batteries?) and iPhone. Sometimes a hard drive for backups.

Trackball, camera, scanner, USB backup drives, thumbdrives, time machine, USB headphones...

No USB = useless machine for me...

Hmm... I plug most of that stuff (kb, mouse, hd, etc.) into my cinema display, and switched from flash drives to email for file transfers a long time ago (though I suppose most people use dropbox now instead).

The idea that I wouldn't need a USB port if I had a Thunderbolt port would be like someone telling me that my car doesn't need a trunk because it has a trailer hitch.

I'd say it's more like claiming you don't need ethernet on your MBA because it has built-in wifi.

Do you think this sort of survey would be sent if Steve was still in charge?

Yeah, I've received them in the past. About every third or fourth computer I buy from them seems to result in a survey, but they've seemed more generically "are you happy with your purchase." (Once I had a half-hour phone call about a MacBook Pro.) But this one seemed more focused on what I'd change or add.

I got a survey yesterday about my iPhone purchase experience. Gave me a chance to slam AT&T.

USB on the Macbook Air? Without it, how the hell would I charge my iPhone?

Oddly, did not get the survey.

With a wall outlet - just like most other electric devices.

So you don't mind carrying a spare USB adapter with you when you're on the road? I try to slim it down as much as possible.

James DeBenedetti – November 03, 2011 06:44PM Reply Quote
When I'm on the road, it's usually in my car, and my phone plugs into the stereo - no laptop required. If you're going to haul around an MBA, power brick, and USB cable with your phone, you might as well keep the plug-sized adapter with you as well.

Well, everybody's saying that the next MacBook Pro's will have the MacBook Air form factor, no optical drive, SSD only, etc. I can't help but think that this will be the end of my MBP as a gaming laptop. SSD's are so expensive, so a volume large enough for my accumulated Mac junk and still have room for a large Windows partition for gaming would be unaffordable. Heat in that form factor will limit processor power and probably lead to a weaker GPU than a full-size MBP would have. My current MacBook Air can play some PC games, but the frame rate isn't great; it can't be my main gaming machine.

I know that laptops, especially Mac laptops, are never the best gaming machines. But I've really enjoyed the last few years of decent gaming on the computer I like best. I hope that era isn't ending.

You're supposed to be storing all of that stuff in the fog cloud!

Yeah, make the cloud as secure, persistent and fast as a hard disk and I will.

James DeBenedetti – February 14, 2012 04:41PM Reply Quote
I'm already preparing to ditch my MBP. It can't remotely compare to a desktop for gaming power, nor the iPad for battery life and portability, and both of those combined cost the same or less than a decent gaming MacBook.

Tony Leggett (Moderator) – February 17, 2012 03:26PM Reply Quote
I really miss the old white macbooks. Functional and well priced.

If everything ends up in MBA format I'll be pissed.

bahamut – February 17, 2012 06:14PM Reply Quote
I'm hoping for the MBA 15" and 17". But what's happened to drive tech? Hard drives were at 2tb 2 years ago and where we have we gone since? As for SSDs, I hardly see the prices plunging. Bit of a problem there, old Mr. Moore.
