I'm going to have a nice big ol' bitchy post next week as soon as I'm allowed to talk about the coming shitstorm.

People aren't supposed to know yet but our New Corporate Overlords are about to integrate all of us into their HR system. They've said that our job titles don't directly align with theirs, though. The result? They're going to demote EVERYBODY one level. And I mean EVERYBODY. Thousands of us. "VP" becomes "Director". "Director" becomes "Sr. Manager". "Sr. Manager" becomes "Manager". "Manager" becomes "Supervisor". "Principal" becomes "Specialist".

This is going to be catastrophic. VPs will probably stick it out until they reach their retention bonus date. Everybody else is going to run for the exit.

Does that mean that everyone's getting a bump down in pay, too? Does a current Specialist become Assistant to the Specialist?

Sorry, CS, that sucks. I hope that they get the blowback that they deserve.

Moves like that are rarely designed to preserve salary and benefits, Janet.

As part of the acquisition, they promised not to reduce pay or benefits for the first year. I would expect pay cuts to happen promptly on January 4th, 2018.

Packages to leave will start about a month before that.

One of the benefits they committed to maintaining was the severance package. New company's severance policy is SUBSTANTIALLY worse than previous company's. I think that may have something to do with why they've chosen the mass-demotion route. Demotion without reducing pay is just an insult. If you quit because of it, their unemployment insurance premiums won't be impacted. It's a good way to thin the herd early to cut costs without having to pay out any severance or higher insurance rates.

My wife and I started taking a Norwegian Language class this week.

Yep.

I tried, once, but it was at a community college at night and taught by an old lady who had lived in Norway for a decade or so, but who was not a native speaker or trained teacher.

After a couple of sessions of looking at her old post cards, and learning the nominative pronouns, I found that I didn't have the energy to get there after work and dropped the course. I felt bad about it.

You probably have much better teachers where you are; I hope that the course goes well!

The first class was good. The class is held at Mindekirken... the Norwegian Memorial Lutheran Church. Our instructor is a young guy who spent his childhood going to Norwegian Language Camp every year and now works as a translator. He's a proud language nerd. We're using the standard college textbook for Norwegian "Sett I Gang".

The rank-and-file workers started receiving their title-change notices today. There's a guy who sits near me who is the Lead Technician for end user support and really is ready to move into a formal manager or at least supervisor role. Instead, he's getting bumped down to "Associate 2 - Help Desk". Not exactly the title you want on your resume when you're looking for a manager/supervisor role.

The formal communication is coming from each person's direct manager. My manager is on vacation until the middle of next week so her people won't find out their exact titles until 3 days before the change actually happens. In fact, most of them still don't even know that a change is coming.

Universal health care.

That's awesome, CS. At least you're somewhat acclimated. I'd like to think that if it weren't for not ever moving again, I'd move to Scandinavia (Denmark if single and time to invest in the design scene, Norway if married because my wife will want to get hardcore into raising or riding reindeer). I'm more a tequila than vodka though.

Someone may or may not have just submitted several applications for IT Management jobs in Oslo.
