Yeah, promises, promises. I did get an extra bonus last year for staying but not enough for me to put up with the shaft this year.

Funny how "bad economy" == "make sure that we give the upper levels SOMETHING"...

In America, the only respectable form of socialism is socialism for the rich.
Having just returned from 15 days away from the orifice I'm feeling that perpetual angst of HOLY SHIT I'VE BEEN HERE 10 YEARS!!!!! Coupled with the fact that we have a controlling systems group who think PHP or other front end tools are major security risks (yes, anything is if you misuse it) which effectively means that avenue for personal growth is disabled because I'm just farking tired of fighting that fight. Coupled with the fact the CIO thinks we are quote "tinkerers" versus real programmers when in fact we are professionals in our field who know when something is an application or requires capital P programming expertise. Coupled with the fact the pay doesn't suck (for Maine) considering everywhere else I've looked required a 15-25% pay cut (no thanks), besides I'm saving some 18% of my salary annually. Coupled with the fact that I have some capital and some desire but just haven't found the right comfort level with that risk. And the 30 minute each way commute is really old because even in the Mini a straight highway is a straight highway (yes I take back roads).

Guess this is a boss bitch (as in a bitch from a boss) but we've been advertising for/recruiting carers the last little while. In fact we're always advertising.
God I hate, hate, HATE the advertise/interview/recruit/train process -- it's so tedious and draining. Had two interviews today that are both in that grey/iffy borderline area. I'd rather they were either really bad or really good (and christ, when I say "excellent verbal communication skills (fluent english)" I do NOT want a heavily accented Indian who's only been in the country two months - arrrgghhh!)
For every 10 enquiries we might do 2 interviews. For every 10 interviews we might get 2 trainees. For every 10 trainees we might get 1 quality carer who then doesn't leave after 3 weeks. And then my partner (god bless her cotton socks) will decide she has a problem with that 1 good carer...
Arrrgghhh!
Is wiping benches and wiping asses really that hard?

Is the baby born, then, Tony? I haven't been keeping track of the time. If so, congratulations!

No, not yet. 9 weeks to go. Believe me, you'll know it when it arrives...
The "wiping asses" bit in the previous post refers to mine, not our impending child's.
Of course, a carer that can multitask and do both would be perfect...

Well, if you add just a couple of letters, somebody who's into whipping asses would be easier to find.

Well, they're no way to keep up with demand for Filemaker developers.

Their hourly rates usually hurt more than their "services."

Got two weeks left. Quite a few layoffs where I work. It's cutting hard in my department... I have no replacement to train or anything.
SAN design / admin, server administration, renderfarm design / admin, workstations, edit bays, oh my. Soon, nobody to maintain them. This comes in the middle of a project where I just bought $1mil in hardware that has not yet been set up.

Aw, that hurts. So, are they gonna hire you as an independent consultant in 2 weeks time?

Sorry, Curtis. Was this completely unexpected?
Curtis

Lots of cuts recently, but very unexpected. Was kinda hoping that would be career material. Guess the name "Walt Disney Imagineering" for 2.5 years full time won't look so bad on the resume. Been writing it over the weekend here....
• Designed a 3-year plan with an estimated $2 million overhaul to post production systems architecture including the Storage Area Network (SAN), render farms, and fiber network as well as file server clusters.
...
• First year system expansion includes upgrade to 28 Servers, 130 Render Nodes, 264TB (raw) SAN disk storage, 17 Tape drives (3 libraries, 946 slots), 5 fiber switches (208 ports).
etc.
I was contractor-scum though, wish I had some cool title. I might be able return as highly-paid consultant? I dunno. It would probably be a while. I gotta just start looking for jobs.

Curtis, send your resume to Porruka... my old company might conceivably have use for you. Possibly in LA. I know nothing, but your skill set might appeal to them. It's a long shot, but who knows?
