Thanks. It'll be interesting to see whether they mention it on today's earnings call.

Heh. At one point this was their 2nd largest customer worldwide. It's been slowly declining since then and now they're about to lose it entirely.

All hands meeting. Bad quarter. Industry down. Competitors down. We're down. Hiring freeze, austerity measures, no talk of layoffs at this time. (Although there never IS such talk until the axe falls.)

For me it's the opposite. We know there are layoffs coming but we don't know when. It'll happen within the next 9 months. It sounds like my area will be getting the axe much sooner than that... probably by the end of October.

In hindsight, I should have known layoffs were coming when the HR department started hoarding printing paper boxes and other boxes of the same size. On the morning of, we were all told and then offered said boxes into which we could load our stuff.

What are the other signs?

At my company, repeated meetings with the announcement that no layoffs are anticipated. (Not sure that's what's happening this time, I'm just a pessimist. And a red shirt.)

yes, we get those times when folks remove paper from full paper cartons just for the empty boxes. Again, we lost another guy this week. I got an email yesterday doling out his responsibilities to us. So, from 17 people down to four now.
Hang in there J-Will.

I suspect that my fate is out of my hands, one way or another. But there's no reason to fear the worst, except for historical precedent. I just don't see the economy turning around anytime soon and, without a resurgent economy, gambling is not going to be where people are spending their money.

Can't fault that logic. But it still amazes me how many people have pretty good wealth and income. There are tons of doctors, lawyers, financial types (et al), and all around the world. Does your business have customers in all the gaming districts on the globe?

Sort of a "due to unforseen circumstances, you are no longer master of your fate or captain of your soul" thing? Sorry to hear it :-(

I meant it more in that the decision, if it is made, will be made so far above my head that the people making it will never have met me. Whatever evaluations, feedback, may feed into the decision have already been made and put in the pipeline months ago.

Pretty much. Not so much in places like Japan (which has a very insular* gaming industry), but elsewhere in East Asia, Europe, etc. we are big.

* Ha, Latin humor: Insular: of or pertaining to an island or islands (Japan is an island chain); also Insular: detached; standing alone; isolated (Japan's gaming market is isolated)

I always do, but I look BACK to make sure that it doesn't pop-out while I'm moving away...

I posted something about a thing that happened at work. Kind of a fuck up, way outside my area of responsibility. On the off chance that the post might have helped my company's competitors, I erased it 30 seconds after I posted it.

You know what is bad for the ego? Not getting hired for the job you're already doing.

More or less. I'm not gone yet. The transition will take a few months.

sorry. I had a thought similar to what you describe, today.
For the first time in about a decade, our team was actually given green light to fill one of the vacant/prior positions.
My first thought was that I forget how to conduct an interview. My second thought was "What if they outshine ME?"
Sorry to hear, CS.
