K, anyone else with mobileme seeing their contacts multiply over and over? There needs to be a way to designate one computer or phone as the master list, and sync to and from that. My iphone is good, but my mini is missing half my contact list, and I have no idea how to sync them back.

A friend of mine who works in IT at T-Mobile Netherlands has told me that Apple's servers had nothing to do with the activation process of iPhones in countries outside the US.
The fact that their systems went down (and most other telcos as well) is the fact that it has never happened before that some many contracts got activated at the same time. T-Mobile Netherlands' system went down too, but never before had it to cope with 100+ shops all trying to use the contract system at the same time.

inneresting, ton. have any further info?
as for waiting in line, it's like
being a refugee, apparently. at least to people who've been lucky enough never to have to stand in line for, say, food, shelter.

I think everyone who was stuck in line should be given an iTunes gift card good for a free download of Tom Petty's "Refugee."

When I got my used 8GB iPhone a month ago, I figured I'd be able to sell it relatively easily when the 3G models came out.
Sure enough, a guy is on his way over to buy it for $299. I guess he sold his with the intention of getting a 3G iPhone before he realized that he'd need to fork out a lot of extra money each month for data/text.
For me, the new plan ends up being CHEAPER because the old plans weren't eligible for corporate discounts. The new ones are. My company discount will make the new plan about $5 less per month.

It cracks me up how people get offended by posts on Craigslist.
I've seen a bunch of people posting things like, "If you buy one of these iPhones for $300, you're an idiot! They're $199 new!"
I haven't deleted my listing yet (not going to delete it until I have cash in hand) and someone just sent me a message (from their Blackberry, no less) that says:
Quote
They are 299 brand new
Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone
Really. Seriously. Why did they take the time to even respond? If it's too much, don't buy it. Less than an hour after I posted the ad for $299, I had 6 people interested.

In America, the only respectable form of socialism is socialism for the rich.
My phone is doing OK after the update (pre-official release update via that link) but ...
1. the thing seems less responsive from time to time
2. syncing is very strange, e.g., constant spinning sync wheel next to iPhone in Device List of iTunes.
2a. screen on iPhone stops saying "sync in progress" and releases phone but itunes still believes it's syncing.
Should I do a reset?
This is a backup but is recovered in some stage of the reset process?

I've noticed that, for me, the iPhone syncs apps last. While it is syncing apps iTunes does NOT say that it is syncing, and the iPhone is usable. The only sign is that, by the icon for the iPhone in the left column of iTunes, the circle of arrows is spinning and on the iPhone apps pop into view one by one (if you are restoring apps that weren't present on the phone).

Illinois is not on the list. You want me to go get you one? If things are like last time the ATT stores might have em stacked up and no takers. You cannot imagine just how unhelpful the staff at these stores are. Or maybe you can. shudder...

Today I discovered an iPhone feature that I'm sure would have been documented somewhere had I cared to look for it first... if you're using regular headphones (that is, headphones without a built-in mic), the iPhone is smart enough to activate it's own microphone for voice calls. This means I can use my Shure E3c headphones at work and not have to unplug them to make or receive phone calls.

The microphone on my iPhone just stopped working. I can make calls fine with a headset attached but if I try to use it by itself (either normally or on speakerphone) the person on the other end of the line can't hear me. I'm at the Apple store right now but I have to wait 25 minutes to have a Genius look at it.

Not my worst Apple Store experience, but certainly not the best either. They went through all of the usual things and didn't seem to be very good at listening to me. The first guy started "explaining" to me that "the iPhone is really a computer" and that there is a switch inside that tells the computer when a headset is plugged in and sometimes that switch gets stuck. He said that he was going to go and plug in a headset to see if it would reset that switch. When he came back, he handed me my phone and said, "That fixed it. Here you go."
Of course, had he been listening to me rather than tuning me out as soon as he THOUGHT he knew what my problem was, he would have heard the following:
The microphone has stopped working on the phone.
When I'm on a call, I can hear the other person but the other person can't hear me.
It works fine when I use a headset but doesn't work when I use the phone normally or in speakerphone mode.
I tried power cycling the phone but that didn't help.
Apparently he missed almost every word I said. I might as well have been talking to him through my non-functional iPhone.
I had assumed that telling him about how it works with the headset plugged in but doesn't work without the headset plugged in would have implied that I had ALREADY TRIED PLUGGING IN A HEADSET AND THEN UNPLUGGING IT! My description of the problem should have clued him in to the fact that his magical troubleshooting step had already been performed and did not correct the problem.
Of course, he hadn't actually listened to me well enough to even hear what the problem was. The reason he declared the problem fixed was because he made a phone call with it and could hear the other person. Except that's the opposite of what was actually wrong. I could hear the other person just fine all along. The problem was that they couldn't hear me.
Luckily, the other guy had already set me up for the next available Genius Bar appointment which was 25 minutes later. So I waited 25 minutes and when I finally got to talk to a Genius, he jumped to conclusions as well and didn't really listen to me (at first). He tested the phone and it seemed to work fine to him. Of course, that's because he, too, assumed the problem was that I couldn't hear the other person. After explaining the problem again (he listened this time), I told him that he could go ahead and do a firmware restore on the phone and test it again. That took 10 minutes or so after which the phone still had the same problem. They told me that they were going to just exchange it for me and would send a manager over to get it all taken care of.
I ended up running into the same problem I had to deal with on Friday when I bought the phone in the first place where AT&T had my account flagged as a business account so the system wouldn't let them swap out my phone until I called AT&T and had them remove my corporate discount again. Once that was taken care of, they swapped the phones out (explaining that they needed to send my old one in so they could figure out what caused the problem and make sure that it isn't something that might happen to others).
The whole thing took an hour from the time I walked into the store to the time I left the store with the replacement phone. Now I'm back home restoring all of my music and stuff.

Pawnage 2.0 is out. I can't get it to work, but it works for some people.
But almost no 2.0 jailbroke apps yet. all you 1.x apps won't work.

Next verse, same as the first... Apple's always been horrible with predicting/meeting demand for new products, especially over-the-top popular ones. As it was with the Powerbook 180c, so it shall be with the iPhone 3g.
