Article is more or less a big DUH!, but it is useful to have someone acknowledge that SJ knows that the iPhone is "the right way" to have a platform and even "closed platforms" have A LOT of "jail breakers".

There are so many people overhere carrying iPhones, Apple's boneheaded to keep tying it up to a certain provider as it's limiting their official sales. A German guy that I used to work with told me last week a lot of people in Germany won't buy an iPhone because of the huge data plans that come with it.

Is it boneheaded of Apple or prudent? I mean Nokia only started selling unlooked phones in the last year or two, previously they were only available from carriers or "grey market". The old fat men in expensive shapeless suits still have a lot to learn about what consumers want to do with cell phones. Apple essentially sells iPhones w/o carrier enticement passed on to consumers. They must get some slice from the carriers upon activation. If the carriers (AT&T in US) decides to stop rebating Apple I am quite sure that Apple would sell even more iPhones, as long as AT&T decides not to do some really evil device blocking. Why poke the dying beast with any sharper a stick than they already have?

This article reflects most of my sentiments, Apple is limiting their own markets at the moment. In Europe while people expect hefty subsidised phones they also expect to get a cheap contract (< 10 euros a month) when they bring their own phone.

Now, most of these 'sim only' contracts do not include dataplans, but in the foreseeable future this is certainly coming.

So, buy the handset you want and get a contract you like. At the moment, Apple is shutting themselves out of this practice. And I wonder if Apple truly doesn't understand the telecom market reality outside of the US markets or if AT&T is holding them back.

Things are going to change. I really think that WHEN someone buys Moto's handset business there will be a earth shattering shift in how people GLOBALLY think about phones. As prices for legitmate full function normal sized laptops get down to the SAME price as tricked out phones people are really going to demand a different kind of service. To a wireless company data and voice ARE THE SAME, the pricing will have to reflect that reality.

Apple is almost certainly aware of just how many of its iPhones are unlocked, they will have to balance the value of selling "solutions" that require carrier cooperation with the volume that would (?will) come in a "plan agnostic" world.

Android will force carriers to be a lot more open, and Nokia is selling a fair number of phones sans plans. Change is going to happen quickly, maybe even all at once.

I get the sense that Verizon is probably in the best position to have legitimate "coopetition" for the evolving open access portion of spectrum. That's were I want to use my ubiquitous network access device/iPhone/android...

It's ridiculous that we have no search features on the iPhone. At least Palm could do that quite easily.

Push emaiil-calendar-contats, global address list(?), cisco vpn, WPA2/802.1x,security policies, device config, remote wipe, native MSFT ActiveSync and Exchange support as part of existing iPhone apps, mail, cal, contacts...

Bokay, I've typed on my sister's iPhone for many many minutes and it is different than thumb typing on a RIM, but somehow I really don't think that one can one say that makes the iPhone ditchable. Can you? The one situation in which I will concede that the RIM style keys are more feasible is when you are trying to walk and type -- with the iPhone I find myself holding with the left hand and typing (badly) with the right, basically several characters per min slower than using the two thumbs method of walking and typing on the RIM, but how many people really ought to be living their life in a constant state of multitasking...

(OTOH there was that picture I linked to of some Brits wrapping lamposts in foam...)

Software update available in June. Beta going out (today?) to a select group.

SDK available now, but I'm guessing you won't be able to buy/install apps until June when the software update becomes available.

That seems odd. Should be a lot of apps available by then, but it could be frustrating for a developer to have something ready to go in a couple of weeks but can't do anything with it for almost 3 months.
