While I suppose it's possible that something will change with the new hardware, I know from experience that it is possible to do a SIM swap with the current hardware... even if you don't have your account set up for an iPhone (you just don't get visual voicemail if your account isn't provisioned for iPhone).
John Willoughby – Re: iPhone – June 09, 2009 06:48AM
I had a representative try to explain to me how I could pay $10 for a second line for my account, get an iPhone 3G$ at the subsidized price for the new line, swap SIMs, and somehow magically get the new phone for just the $10/month (plus the initial fee). I didn't pay a lot of attention, since it was confusing enough that I was pretty sure that I'd end up forking over major cash to AT&T in the end.

Mind trick These aren't the iPhone data plans you are looking for...

It could just make sense to buy an unlocked phone from Europe as there's multiple countries now where Apple has to sell them without a contract. It's most definitely more expensive upfront, but cheaper in the long run.

The new 3gs (now that's an odd name) is not (yet) on the list, but I suspect this is a matter of days.

AT&T is selling "no commitment" (i.e. no contract) 32GB iPhone3G$ for $699.
tliet – Re: iPhone – June 09, 2009 08:49AM
Ah ok, wasn't aware of that.
bahamut – Re: iPhone – June 09, 2009 05:18PM
those are not unlocked. they won't work with anyone but at&t.
John Willoughby – Re: iPhone – June 09, 2009 05:31PM
But unlocking is legal, isn't it?
tliet – Re: iPhone – June 09, 2009 08:42PM
It's legal, but is it possible? The phones that are sold in Belgium, France and Italy are unlocked. Not sure why these countries have been able to force Apple to change its way why other EU countries have not. Sales tying (if that's the expression) is as illegal in my country as it's in Belgium but I guess in Belgium they're more serious about it.

Just pre-ordered the 32GB 3Gs.

Me too.

I'll be getting the 16 GB as soon as I can manage it. Finances are a bit tricky at the moment.

I got the original iPhone as a birthday present from my extremely generous inlaws, just a few days after it was released. I'm actually on my second--the first failed under warranty--and it's beginning to act a bit wonky. It must know something's up.
stan adams – Re: iPhone – June 10, 2009 11:35AM
Why that is part of the feature set baked in at the factory!

Better than "planned obsolence" it is "centrally managed malfunction" -- they work out the algorithms so that not too many folks that use the devices to talk to each other / post messages on the complaint, er "help" forums at MacInTouch get the same symptoms. Very effective!

I am going to get the 32GB after I get the first paycheck from the new job. I am going to trade in 1st gen iPhone under warranty (got the AppleCare) and then perhaps give it to my dad.
ddt – Re: iPhone – June 14, 2009 05:32AM
hm, all of a sudden my iphone won't run most apps. All my 3rd paty apps get to the loading screen, exit after one sec to the main iphone screen. anyone seen this? rebooted the phone, sync'd it to the mac, not sure what else. Don't want to restore, since I'm not on the iphone's "home" computer.

Dr Phred (Moderator)Re: iPhone – June 14, 2009 05:46AM
I've seen it, but only a restore fixed it for me.
ddt – Re: iPhone – June 14, 2009 05:54AM
What do you think causes it?

so my options are to live w/o the apps, seeing them there, or live w/o the apps by wiping and restoring to the different computer.

thanks,

ddt

My 1G just started heating up with the usage & standby times being exactly equal, and, the battery life near to nothing.

A restore fixed everything.

Supposedly one-click solution for turning on tethering on an iPhone 3G or 3GS with the iPhone 3.0 OS. I have NOT tested this myself. But probably will, tonight.

dtt, three days late but try just deleting one app. I have had that happen and I deleted a single app and things went back to normal.
