I want to buy my daughter a new laptop, either a Macbook air or (gulp) a Macbook 12". She wants to play the Sims 4. I've watched videos and yes, Macbook Air and 12" work fine these days. I'll want her to eventually have 512GB, but could upgrade later (if it's upgradeable) if we just got 256GB now.

Where would you all go? ebay and Craigslist of course (not far from NYC…for good and bad), but any online sources? I don't want to buy new and pay the Apple tax.

I've had good luck with Apple's refurbs. There are some MacBooks around 15% off (http://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook) and one teeny MBA (http://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_air/11).

Yes, I've been looking at those. Pricey, but they have the advantage of being covered by a warranty. I wonder if my daughter would mind the gold one? I'd hate it, but it's $200 less.

It's hard to believe all these 128gb systems out there. In this day and age, that is unacceptable.

I have had good luck with craigslist. if they have the serial number, you can check to see if it still qualifies for applecare.

Yes, I bought my son's 13" aluminum Macbook on CL for $250 a couple of years back, updated the drive, and he's been using it since.
I found a seller on eBay who resells Macs that have come off lease. Got a Macbook Air (2015 model), core 17, 8GB, 256Gb drive for $779. That's pretty damn good. For some other birthday I can give her a 512GB upgrade. Should take her through half of high school if not further.

Yay! (I am not a subscriber to MOST things... and as such, I have never had Cable/dish/pay TV, nor Amazon PRIME. Just to put this into perspective at my home... this is NICE. I choose NOT to buy from Amazon many times because of the shipping)

Amazon's free shipping threshold $35. (USofA)

I can't bring myself to spend $700 for that. Sorry. I have nostalgia, but I also have a family budget. :)

Yo, SPlartergories!

Is there any bundle with a Parallels upgrade? I have 11, don't really want to pay $49 for this chunky piece of up-chucked blancmange when there might be a bundle out there.

EH?

Bought two of the new web/app security cams from former Amazon employees.
https://www.wyzecam.com

For $20, these things are very nice, CHEAP camera. If one hesitates on Nest, Arlo, Ring, et al... for the normal prices from $100 to $250... or just want similar cameras for crappy tasks, these are a no-brainer. AND make great literal stocking stuffers.
For instance, mine are now monitoring my sump/pump and pointed at our laundry room washer/dryer so that one can see if they are free'd up, which is a normal question yelled across the house here.

I'm very impressed with this CHEAP but effective low-end, entry-level camera.

Wyze cam seems to be the Xiaomi Camera Smart Security Wireless IP camera, with revised firmware and 14 day rolling cloud storage.

That's exactly how Dropcam got started. Looks good. Now, if they have a tilt-pan PoE one, call me.

I like/d mine so much, I thought about buying MORE yesterday... sold OUT...
They are darlings. Like the Amazon push-button thingies.
I wish the mount/bracket would articulate a BIT more... and one could flip/rotate ... in less than 180 degree increments. (aka 90 or so).
I have one of mine magnetically attached to the stacking bracket between lower/washer and upper/dryer, pointed at the status lights so home folks can see if their wash is done.
I need an ITTT to recognize and translate those status lights into notifications... but I've not delved into ITTT. Maybe my software engineering SON can do that. (wishful thinking.
