"Digital hubs." iPod and its successors. (iPhone?) Convergence. How ridiculous will DRM get? Yep, put it all together and it just might make for a successful thread.

Yeah, i've gone on record as saying that any nearly netbook-y thing product apple may put out in the future would come up from the iphone and os x, not down from the macbook and mac os x. it'll be interesting.

ewww!!!! iphone os ewwww!!!!

Remember a few pages back when I said I wouldn't buy a kindle? Well I was wrong. I got one yesterday. I'm very impressed with it so far. I've gotten many free books for it and have loaded it up with text books, audio books and mp3s.
Very easy to read in a variety of lighting conditions.
The web browser needs work, but I can twitter with it, so all is good.

Ok. I'll take up the mantle. I will never buy a Kindle.

Tag, you're it.

It was that damn free Kindle App on the iPod touch that got me. It convinced me that I'd like reading books like that.

WHEN WiMax is part of the deal it might be more appealing...
...then again there may be other tasty options by then: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9895547-1.html

The best thing is having LOTS of books with you, wherever you go. My wife was cool on the Kindle until she had one, then she really got into it. When the top inch of her Kindle's screen stopped updating, she freaked out. It took a lot of soothing and a reminder of her warranty before she calmed down. Amazon shipped her a new one, and she has to ship the defective one back. "New" one (we think it was returned/refurbished due to some very minor scuffing on it) synced all her old books as soon as we registered it. A very smooth process. Now if I could only get Amazon to back up all of the text files and .prc's that I put on mine...

Seems fairly hackable: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40651

Kinda surprised that Amazon, with all the Bezos flavored Kool-Aid, would not be backing shit into the cloud all the time...

...of course with folks like bahamut out there maybe ol' Jeffie Boy would hate to think what happens if Biffy gets sent to the cloud.

Really? Lots of books at with you at one time?

Unless I'm working on a research project I only read a few at a time.

I tend to read science fiction series. I also like to keep a couple of programming references around. It's handy having it all with me, as well as being able to download other books whenever the whim strikes.

Seems like it lives up to its promise. I may get one if Apple doesn't have some thing fun for me soon. I need more than iPhone refreshes to feed my addiction.

I have to admit that finally I am considering the benefits of a NetBook device (larger than my iPhone but smaller than a breadbox). With the unmitigated prowess of a desktop, rather than fork over another few grand for a 15" work laptop it really seems 300-400 bucks for a netbook will do the job.

I can survive mostly on a MBP caliber laptop but the longevity isn't there. A 3 year desktop vs. a 3 year old laptop ... many times the laptop just feels cramped.

Want to buy my Dell Mini 9 with OS X all ready to go?
I just got my Vostro two days ago.

I brought the Dell on my trip to Canada and there's no comparison to being able to pull the computer from a small compartment in your back back, finding an open WiFi node and do some searching about something you're visiting.

For me, a big part of the netbook attraction is not having to worry about losing/breaking/having stolen a month's pay.

tliet – May 17, 2009 03:50AM Reply Quote
True and with no storage space, but just the OS, the risk of losing data is also somewhat mitigated

While I understand the utility you cite, I also know that MANY times WiFi is not easy to find. I also have been largely disappointed with how "un fast" much 3G service is. I suspect that I would NOT be happy with a "net book" until / unless I had ubiquitous access via WiMAX/ 4G. I also feel that the hw & usability within Apple know the same thing. I HOPE that at such a time an iPhone (or other VERY similar device...) would be available whose battery life and functionality would give a leg up on a net book...
