"Digital hubs." iPod and its successors. (iPhone?) Convergence. How ridiculous will DRM get? Yep, put it all together and it just might make for a successful thread.

Why not check out something like Virgin Mobile's contract-free mifi?

I'll do that right now, thanks!
(Though I was hoping to piggyback the USBConnect cost onto a family phone plan. Pennies count these days, etc.)

For 3G data? I don't think any of them are cheap, but a Virgin MiFi was the cheapest option back when I was looking. I've used some Sprint and Verizon USB 3G modems, they worked fine but were not especially speedy and WERE pricey.
When I first got a USB 3G modem, and the Verizon Mac OS X drivers had to be hacked for Sprint,
this website had the best Mac-friendly info. At the time, they would even configure for the Mac an ostensibly Windows-only device for your chosen provider. I think most of them have native Mac support now.

Thanks -- okay, it doesn't have to be a USB (for a MBP...), but AT&T only offers that. Should I be looking at other options?

Hideously Unnatural
They all offer direct USB and MiFi style devices.
I have a Virgin Mobile MiFi, which as mentioned is month to month.
They piggyback on Sprint's network, which I've found to suck eggs in some places and work fine in others.
For instance, in Dallas the last couple of days, my AT&T iDevices were screamIng fast, and the Virgin Mobile MiFi was dropping every few minutes and had latencies in the seconds range.

What a clusterfuck. I guess this is the only move that won't bring them hatred. I remember when in January analysts said the end of Starz was the end of Netflix but the stock skyrocketed since.I guess the end of netflix is coming, it was only premature. If Qwikster had gone forward, I would have dumped both plans. I still may at this point. Not sure.

If I'm an optimist, I say that they got what they wanted in the contracts with content partners who insist on lumping streaming and DVD customers together.

I would rather have companies admit mistakes, then just go forward with a dumb idea just because they don't want to go back on something they have said. I still think it is a good deal, so I am going to stick with it.

Ooh! Scary! Scary! Don't we look mean? You can't see me! But I can see you!
I'm not dropping Netflix. I use the streaming all of the time. I don't have cable.

What a journey.
You guys DID see the SNL netflix skit, right?
You'd have to hold guns to my kids' heads, and be actively engaged in bad things to my wife and I still would not recant the Qwuickxsterr idea IF ONLY TO NOT PLAY INTO SNL'S SKIT!
Man, how FUCKING DUMM/MORANIC/IDOITIC be dey? :)

Hmm. On Windows, at least, iTunes 5.0 "neither requires nor installs QuickTime." That's new. Deprecating old technology?

Just took delivery of a new iPod classic, which I bought from Amazon after realizing that I had a bunch of points I could use to cut the effective price (and after my fifth-generation iPod 60 GB reached full capacity).
When did the plastic wrap on new iPods stop admonishing users to not steal music?

Ha! Haven't thought about that "Don't steal music" disclaimer in a while. I believe it vanished sometime right around when iTunes started selling music? If I have that right then the disappearance was obviously not a coincidence.

Yet my wallets still come with slips of paper saying, "Don't steal money." Odd.
