"Digital hubs." iPod and its successors. (iPhone?) Convergence. How ridiculous will DRM get? Yep, put it all together and it just might make for a successful thread.

Okay, since you bit, I'll start ranting here... .

One thing that gets me particularly (and UX people, please correct me if I'm off base) is the "Rename" button in the ribbon. Now, exposing what might be to some a hidden functionality (1) is all well and good, but the interaction with that button is what, click on file or folder, move mouse to new target, click on Rename button, see that file or folder's name is highlighted, move hands to keyboard, type in new name, check it, click either Rename button or click away? How is this more efficient than click on file or folder name, see that file or folder's name is highlighted, move hands to keyboard, type in new name, check it, click away?

(1) I had to look, but there doesn't seem to be any "rename" button, contextual menu, or menu item for Rename in Snow Leopard. Was there ever in OS X? Searching for "rename" in the OS X Help returns nothing. Huh.

Well, I can only applaud MS for not slavishly copying Apple here but, if this is Windows 8, I may hold at 7 for a while.

Indeed Daniel, if someone new to OS X is going to want to rename a file, they're stuffed. Just like ejecting a floppy...

True, I doubt my mother knows how to change a file's name. But then, I don't think she cares what her documents are named. She's blissfully stuck in a world where metadata doesn't exist, only the contents.

I know it didn't exist in Jaguar. Not sure about before that.

Not sure if you saw this today http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/30/we-need-an-invert-selection-button/ found it interesting.

In terms of the rename function I wish was a menu option as I have had to help so many users figure this out.

Wow, Techcrunch readers are trolls, and knee-jerk ones at that. Guess they all aspire to be Arrington (wow, has mental illness spread that far into American culture?).

Thanks for the link... .

The Techcrunch comments can be a mixed bag, at least the FB comments have cut out a lot of the really bad ones but they are still pretty poor.

You know, if the copy/paste/move functions are the majority of user needs in Explorer, why not use that space to revive the "shelf" from Next? http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/08/26/improvements-in-windows-explorer.aspx

Here is one of the most misleading stories I've seen in the New York Times in quite a while.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/technology/t-mobile-may-suffer-if-att-deal-fails.html

It couldn't be more wrong.

The best possible thing that could happen to T-Mobile right now would be for this deal to fall through. If that happens, they get $3 billion in cash from AT&T as well as a favorable roaming agreement and a bunch of additional spectrum licenses. The roaming agreement and spectrum licenses are valued at about $4 billion for a total of $7 billion in immediate benefits.

They don't even hint at that in this piece.

The only suffering should this deal fail to go through is AT&T. They will lose $7 billion plus whatever they paid the New York Times to run this story.

Just got a NetGear NeoTV 550 and love it. It scans and plays all my network media - most all formats. Has many internet features such as podcasts, music, videos, etc.
So far, so wow.

Did you look at the Western Digital TV Live Hub as well?

Same price but has a built-in 1TB hard drive. It can play media from the local drive, from a networked file share or from a DLNA server. It will also act as a networked file share and DLNA server for other media players. It can also mimic an iTunes shared library so its music files can be played by other computers running iTunes.

Yeah, I had the drive-less WD offering. And half-a-dozen other ones from others.

The one with the drive is a huge improvement over the drive-less versions.

The only thing that it's missing that I wish it had is support for Amazon streaming.

Anybody have any experience with USBConnect modems from AT&T (for Macs)? I have a contract already with that damn company... but I guess I'd entertain the idea of some other mobile internet connection for the laptop if it's cheap and reliable.
