Regarding audio hardware, software and such.

What do you stream to?

I had a stereo-link hooked to a scratch-built meta42 headphones amp hooked to a Sonic T-Amp. The problem with that is that the stereo-link has trouble waking sometimes and since it's on a KVM switch, I lose my tunes when I swap machines. I had the unit hooked up via an Airport Express which is better in terms of UI, but the sound seems much less lush and full. Maybe I should try running it through the headphones amp? Or maybe just live with what I finally did, which is run a separate USB cable to the MBP. Yeah, a small pain in the ass to connect a second cable, but still a pain in the ass. Moreover, it suggests that my experience with listening to iTunes at the downstairs stereo will suck horse tube.

Any thoughts? Are any of you as obsessed with audio hardware as you are about macs and cameras? Of course anything but lossless still sucks and ... well, lossless from CDs? Kind of a joke, right? But more on that for another post.

In other news, if you have an iPhone, you MUST get the new Etymotic earphones unless you have massive ear canal troubles/phobia. They are so incredible. I think they are better than my 4's, although those are 4 years old so maybe they have been played out a bit.

In America, the only respectable form of socialism is socialism for the rich.
Are those the ones that also have the little mic and switch on the wire?

I actually find the Apple buds to be just fine except when I use them during exercise in cold weather where the wires stiffen up and force the buds, which just lie in the ear rather than stuff your canal (ahem!!) forcing the buds to fall out all the time.

Anyway, the other week in NY I met someone with a third party set which also had the nice mic for hands free talking and the switch in the mic just like Apple's.

Doesn't AirTunes use Apple Lossless compression? Yes, it does. So, hooking it via glass should give you straight signal into the amp, without any distortion?

Sorry, I don't believe in music sounding 'better, or wider' while using a really expensive cable to transport digital signals.

I don't have an optical-capable receiver, unfortunately, so I can't use the fancy cables you're talking about tliet. So I'm stuck trying to find a better DAC than the craptacular one in the AE.

The ety's dwell at http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/hf2.aspx

There's just no comparison with the Apple buds. It's night and day. To fit them in your ear canal, it helps immensely to wet them a little.

Moreover, you can play the ety's at a lower volume since they block out so much sound so they are healthier.

Well, the appleTV 2.0 will work as an airtunes destination now. I'd expect the quality of the DAC isn't much better than the express.
