Hideously Unnatural
So Woodward is saying that we've started acting like the terrorists in order to counter their tactics? BRILLIANT

Woodward's not saying what we're doing. As far as I am concerned, killing terrorist leadership is fine by me. It's the civilian deaths that are dragging us down, and since we don't know what Woodward's magic bullet is, we don't know how it affects those.

So Woodward is saying that precise targeting and political progress leading to a Medhi army cease-fire and Sunni tribes working with us - in addition to brute force - is creating success? Sounds more like reality than the simple formula of Surge = Winning.

Oh God, I'd almost forgotten today's date (here in Australia at least). My thoughts go out to all those folks in New York & Washington this day 7 years ago...

Bob was on NPR and I have to say that he did strongly hint there was a "transformative" kind of technology behind this detection. Like tanks going out of trench warfare if I recall his analogy.

Top of my head I am guessing that is a kind of "eavesdropping". I remember about 20 years ago the FBI was using heterodyne laser interferometry to "listen" into the conversations of drug dealers and other people behind large panes of glass. There is no theoretical reason why the same technique could not be used to aim an appropriate laser at ANY reasonable rigid surface, use an a sensitive detector and get a audio picture of what is happening almost anywhere. With good enough algorithmic filtering almost any background sounds could be subtracted out. On top of the filters that are well known for all satellite links, "keyword sensing", and "cell phone software based remote activated eavesdropping (just like the Dark Knight's BatPuter that Morgan Freeman was put in charge of)" there is literally nothing short of having all your conversations face to face inside a foot thick lead bunker that is not going to be "heard"...

While the "big brother" aspects of this are enormous, and do sort of frighten me it is hard to be outraged about that aspect on September 11th...

lasers. I recall one of the hobby mags having plans when I was in the Frat. That would have been 87.
When I visited the a Naval warfare location once, they told me that they had ultrasonic transducers at and pointing towards every window to interfere with laser listening devices.

Well, we are all but shut down today. Nobody is doing anything but watching in horor.

How about the rest of the world?

Fuck.

Hey, what smells like breakfast? Oh crap, my brain is on fire again.
I woke up to see the video of the second plane whacking into the WTC. The U.S. has been sucker punched and is going to jump up with both fists swinging looking for the first chin it sees to clock.
They've shut down the TransAmerica building and the Golden Gate is under watch (whatever that means).
I do wish they'd fuckin' stop with the damn damn supergraphics with "Day of Terror!", etc.

You can't get to www.cnn.com. Guess that Web thing isn't dead. And they are telling people to use email instead of phone calls.

We also have a plane crash SW of Pittsburgh...

Cigarettes and whiskey and wild, wild women.
Dear Terrorists:

Your cause is at an end. We are going to find you, bomb your miserable corner of the earth into a parking lot of fused glass, imprison everyone you know, and give billions and billions of dollars to whichever nation, cause and/or ethnic group pisses you off the most. We found the last set of whackos who bombed the World Trade Center, the nutjob who machine-gunned CIA headquarters, and we found =him= in the middle of fucking nowhere, and dragged him kicking and screaming to face trial. We're gonna find you. You're next.

Your Pal,

Soup.

Reality Check:

This is the worst attack on the US since the War of 1812.

Expect the US to respond first with cruise missiles at symbolic enemies allied with the likely perpetrators (Bye-bye, Taliban) and then when the FBI and CIA finally get the investigation underway, the high muckey-mucks will find themselves standing trial within two years.

DPBD -

I had to call my Mom in a panic this morning. My dad (an engineer involved in a pretty innocuous peace-dividend project) was supposed to fly down to a meeting at the Pentagon today. Turned out things were re-scheduled he made the trip back yesterday.

Soup, I wish I was as sanguine as you that the leaders behind this will be punished, but I seriously doubt it, just as the real leaders of the original WTC bombing weren't punished.

What I find very interesting about all of this is that any Islamic terrorist group that could carry off something this big against the US could surely have done the same against Israel -- but they didn't.

Jesus christ. Among other things, kiss the stock market goodbye for good.

Wish I could believe that the US will knock out the terrorists, but with Dubya in charge...

Well, he did say that this was "apparently an act of terrorism..."

I do wish Wobs was here for this one.]

I was alarmed enough at a company of T-72's. (I want one.) Anything chemical or radioactive would be a Bad Thing. But I will need to hear it from a trusted source. In other words, not from the Bush administration.

This is a really interesting analysis of the horrible events in Mumbai.

http://exiledonline.com/mumbai-exporting-pakistans-resources/

It zooms in on why this attack is so different from the earlier terrorist attacks.

Gosh, site is overloaded. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that about 60% of people from the subcontinent that work overseas ARE IN TECHNOLOGY...

Really quite a mess. Not too shocking to see how the Indian Security Forces deal with terrorists, but ought to make one all the more appreciative that terrorists are NOT operating more widely. And that I do not live in a port city: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7754456.stm
