True, but Erdogan is a nasty piece of work..

Sorry, I was actually asking sincerely. I seem to think there have been a few, but the examples that pop to mind were not exactly democratic.

Seems the coupsters have put out a pro-democracy, pro-human rights statement and pledged to keep all international agreements in place (hey, that sounds better than the current GOP platform!), but propaganda is propaganda.

Everything I read/hear, agreed.

It's strangely like the flip side of "he's a tyrant, but he's _our_ tyrant": in those cases, the States would prop up the Western-friendly authoritarian.

My two problems with the attempted coup were that 1) It wasn't bloodless and 2) it wasn't successful.

I've read rumors that he engineered the "coup" to justify the actions that he wanted to take. No evidence, of course.

“Then he looked at me and said, ‘How was I supposed to know that cowboy George Bush would announce he wanted us ‘dead or alive’ and then invade Afghanistan to hunt us down?’” Mitchell writes. “KSM explained that if the United States had treated 9/11 like a law enforcement matter, he would have had time to launch a second wave of attacks.” He was not able to do so because al-Qaeda was stunned “by the ferocity and swiftness of George W. Bush’s response.”"]

Nice revisionist history. I don't buy it.

After Pearl Harbour the US nuked a country. Twice. They were fully expecting (and wanted) a war.

I have no doubt that invading Afghanistan was enormously disruptive to al Qaeda and the Taliban, and I'm sure that numerous plans and plots were wrecked. But I feel that the true end-goal of al Qaeda was not so different from Isis... they wanted a holy war with the west. The fact that they had expected to be able to keep poking the bear for longer than they did doesn't really matter in the long run.

Then we took our eyes off the ball and invaded Iraq to establish an Athenian democracy on the Persian Gulf. The war in Afghanistan remained unwon, and we toppled the primary obstacle to Iranian expansionism in the region. Killing tens of thousands of the lucky new "democracy's" citizens.

Petty much what JW said.

And yes, Al Qaeda wanted a war… and they wanted to provoke the US into destroying its economy by pursuing the longest war in the nation's history. Success!
