My pleasure, naturally.

Yes -- thanks for keeping it up, ahem...
Do you rsync to an off server drive? Using rsync server or manually? I frequently have a shell script fire off that simply rsyncs a directory to another mounted drive...
Funny, am rsync'ing right now my Pictures folder.
I use this command:
rsync -avE "Aperture" Pictures/ /Volumes/Blackberry/backups/Pictures/
... which actually never quite seems to just move the files that have changed, instead it goes through the and appears to traverse every file and I hear a ton of disk crunching. I'm used to it scanning the tree, then writing only the necessary changes.
I think the -E (copy extended attributes) is what screws it up and makes it more of a glorified copy rather than the typical rsync.
Any experience like this?

I do daily backups of all of the disks to a backup RAID using rsnapshot, which is a front-end for rsync.
I was using CLI rsync to migrate from the one disk to the other.
The process I used was:
1) In another, identical machine:
1a) Install new disk
1b) Format & Partition like old machine
1c) Install OS (FreeBSD 6.2) on new drive
1d) Install rsync via ports on the new drive
2) Run a full rsync -av / user@newmachine:/
3) Go home during the copy because it's taking too long
4) Run another rsync as above to get closer to "right now"
5) Shut down all services which write to disk - apache, mysql, postgresql, webx, etc.
6) Run one last rsync as above to get to "right now"
7) Reboot the temp machine with the new disk to see if it boots properly
8) Shut down both machines
8a) Trade busted disk for new disk
8b) Reboot
There were a couple of files that didn't copy because they were corrupt on read, so I went back to last month's backup to copy them.

As far as the -E flag, I only use that on my Macs, naturally.
The important part is that there's a large amount of speedup listed at the end of the rsync.
rsync has to go through and find out what's changed first, so that means you will definitely hear a bunch of disk thrashing.
The -v flag should show you the sent bytes and actual sent bytes and a speedup. If you are getting close to a 1.0 speedup, you're actually copying all the bits.

cool thanks!
> sent 3106979536 bytes received 128100 bytes 10586397.40 bytes/sec
> total size is 32576937529 speedup is 10.48
I'm thinking the -E flag copies more simply because of weird metadata time stamps or something... I've added a lot of photos since last backup but changed only a few dozen.
