Got my new iPad last night, though I haven't had much time to play with it yet. Text looks *vastly* better, especially in ebook readers.

If you ever move to iOS, there is a great HP-15C emulator. It uses the same ROM code that the hardware version used. I like having an RPN calculator around.

My boss (the law school dean) has announced a plan to purchase new iPads for all faculty members. Oops--I bought my own already. Actually, frustrating as this is in a sense for me financially, realistically I'd want my own anyway, as I really want the 64 GB model (the school will be buying 16 GB iPads).

Considering how hard I had to fight to get a Mac when I joined the faculty, and then over the next few years to stick with the Mac, this pro-Apple move is a local sign of how far we've come.

Apple seems to have gone past a tipping point now. More often than not pictures of people working behind a computer in the media show Apple devices. Usually MacBooks in some form, but iPads are also seen everywhere. I only seems to notice Android pads in stores, not so much in the wild. And a phone these days (one that's not of a teenager) is usually an iPhone.

It looks like this has happened after the death of Steve Jobs, which proved to many people just how much Apple has become a household name.

Around the turn of the century, my employer removed the Macs from every division except publications. They also spent the last several years upgrading our BlackBerrys instead of switching to the iPhone. Now imagine my surprise when I discovered a few months ago that our board and executive team were all issued iPads, with the claim that we're going paperless and won't be printing board materials in the future.

I survived the iPad weekend. We had lines, but they were not as big this year. But the new iPad is not nearly as constrained.

Yeah, I was able to waltz into a store today and had the pick of a number of models. Ended up with a wifi only 32gig. I wish the cost of a 4G one wasn't well over $200/yr total -- I might write up how I'm having to alter my ideas of use cases (for example, probably won't use a weather or transit schedule app on the iPad because I won't be able to update info "in the wild").

You know what would be nice? If the iTunes app were smart enough to find all the iPhone apps you've already bought/downloaded (paid/free) in iTunes, and automatically sync all the passwords and logins. I'm having to remember or dig out what I logged in with for Flipboard, etc., and it's tedious.

Even better would be if iTunes could at least direct you to the iPad versions of the iPhone apps you've already bought (Weather Channel, Jetpack Joyride, etc.).

Similarly -- am I missing something, or do you have to buy these things all over again to get the up-rez'd versions? Or the iPad versions? (Let's not even talk about digging out the "I paid for the OS X version of 1Password, do I have to pay for the iPad version" info.)

My screen seems to have a yellowish tint. Trying to decide whether to seek an exchange...

I would. Though the yellowish tint tends to clear up over time, if it's the same problem earlier iPads had. Who wants to take a chance? Go now while supply is still adequate.

ddt, it's mostly developer-dependent.

Any app can do this using iCloud, if the developer implements it.

At least the device is smart enough to automatically download all your apps that you bought on another iOS device.

What apps are doing that? Any developer worth their salt has upgraded the graphics in a minor update.

All my apps updated normally when I used "Check for App Updates" or whatever it's called in iTunes.

Jeff, at Ars Technica forums is a discussion going on about the yellow tint.

Tony Leggett (Moderator) – March 19, 2012 08:31PM Reply Quote
I prefer a slightly warmer tint if possible. Photos are more vibrant and I find it less harsh on the eyes...

But if is looks like everything's dunked in piss, then perhaps that's too far...

I got my work iPad upgraded late last week. I'm loving the new screen. I've yet to notice either heat or extra weight. The text is so sharp and clean. Pictures look great, but I spend most of my time reading text, so the ease on the eyes is greatly appreciated.

Jeff Cooper – April 02, 2012 06:29AM Reply Quote
The yellow tint has diminished over time, to the extent that I don't see it anymore. I've seen suggestions that it was due to incompletely cured glue. Who knows? What matters is that the screen is gorgeous.
