BoxBook Pro

The more the boxes change, the more they stay the same... or don't.

(talk about the hardware here)

OK, after digging around it appears there isn't that much difference between the i7 and Xeon (particularly the 3500 series) after all. In fact, it appears they are pretty much the exact same chip, just different names. I have not had a chance to go verify differences in cache and all of that; might be some differences there.

One key difference is the use of ECC RAM on the Xeons. That will actually affect performance slightly, which may be why most of the gamers are going after the i7 instead of the Xeons. But since very few games actually take advantage of multiple cores (although that is changing), Core 2 Duo systems are still great for that.

Between the Dell and the Mac Pro, the biggest difference will be expandability and Mac OS X. Having used Vista for a while now, there's no way you'd get me to use Vista on a production machine. Not because of stability (that's there, but not very much) but because Windows will NOT stay out of your way and let you get work done.

Take a look at www.aperionaudio.com. I have the 5B Fusion system.

Compiled that table myself.

I got the Dell pricing from a catalog and customized at dell.com/mar and looked in the catalog section.
The Apple pricing is likely from .edu store IIRC.

I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a 2.93 Quad and max the RAM and increase HD from OWC.
This lineup is really, really, really bad and leaves me spinning. Thank goodness I can get the minor .edu discount.
It's a home computer purchase although I've done a little billing this year so I can pay for it that way. I really don't burn the candle on both ends... gets too tiring.
I just want the extra power of the tower compared to the iMac and MacBook*. Would have already pulled the trigger if they had a config that was more enthusiast like the Dell. Why they choose to use server class CPU skus is beyond me ... the benchmarks from ppl who've built Core i7 9xx class based machines are the same as the Xeon 3500 series Apple uses in the Quad.

thanks -- i don't think those specs are comprable CPUs. the Nehalem Xeons in the Mac Pro are 3500 and 5500 Intel series; at best, dells use Xeons in the 5400 series.

lenovo will have something more similar to the mac pros.

Right. They -dell- are using the Core i7 920/940 series AFIK.

Will be nice to see other's pricing in this class.

I thought pricing between the Xeon 3500 and i7 was close. As in they were both expensive. But not as expensive as the Xeon 5500. In other words, I don't think it would have saved Apple that much to go with an i7 vs a Xeon 3500 in the single chip Mac Pro.

Also, the Mac Pro single-chip config maxes out officially at 8 GB RAM, but will likely support more than that.

Just confirmed which rewards card to place my order on...

Not yet. I have to twist some more and more importantly time its arrival.

I am not a spendthrift, I don't take these things easily. :)

Nehalem Mac Pro is a hand-in-glove fit for the full 64-bit Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) that will put Mac Pro on par with two-processor RISC Unix workstations.

Hmmm... wasn't that what it used to be?

Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different - because it's us

Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me

And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care

Hand in glove
The Good People laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have

Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have

And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care

So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath

If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath

For the Good Life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm you little charmer

But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
Oh ...
