Politics. Don Granberry on the old Spork Boards was quite fond of talking about them, and here we continue on in that fine tradition.

Well, the FBI just cancelled the hearing with Apple tomorrow. "Outside parties" may have given them a way into the phone. Given the general consensus that the whole point of this charade was to establish precedent for using the All Writs Act to compel companies to decrypt their devices, it seems more likely that the FBI saw that Apple's lawyers were likely to annihilate their position and they backed down. Now they will wait for a case that involves a company with a smaller legal budget, or a more compelling public cause, and try again.

Spending tax payer money, they will build case after case, backing down whenever the odds start mounting against them. Eventually, they will win a case and precedent will be set. Yay, legal system.

[EDIT]
The case is postponed, not cancelled. Not sure that invalidates my analysis of the government's strategy, though.

FBI: *files for a continuance*"

One of the few times I'll say hooray for Apple legal...

Spot on, JW. And that is why Apple was correct to ask for clarity from the legislative branch. Though some will argue that they already did by specific omission in CALEA.

Wow. Apple may not be proof against the NSA, but nobody's trying harder.

What a journey.
yet another reason for them to move out(side the USA); make that spaceship HQ a floating platform.
I've always said the problem with 'today' is there is no where for a mass of people to MOVE TO to get away from other people they wish to not associate with any longer.
An Apple-centric planet... of its own..I wonder if it would be capitalistic-centric, or perfect socialism?

I wonder if Apple didn't do it for them in secret.

Guys, next time be more discrete. China, you know.

That's certainly tin-foil-hat stuff there, Baha. But not necessarily wrong.

It was bad spycraft of the FBI to publicly ask for help. They should've asked in private. Before someone changed the iCloud password.

OMG! The shooter had a 5C. Weird.

They never needed help. They've had dealings with this Israeli company (Cellebrite) for at least 4 years (based on a quick Google search). This was all about getting a legal precedent established. One that they could bludgeon American companies with for any current and future security implementations.

I may or may not have had dealings with that company in the past. They have a product that lets retailers migrate data between mobile devices. It was especially useful in the days of basic feature phones when address books, text messages, pictures, etc. weren't stored in the cloud by default. With Cellebrite, a customer could buy a new phone and the retailer would transfer everything over from their old phone for them... often using undocumented "features" to do so.

It doesn't surprise me at all that they would be the ones who could manage this.

That was his work phone. He destroyed his personal phone. What are the odds there's something of use on a phone the government owns?

Work phone, really? Wow, I can just imaging his memos/reminders app on that then.

1. Call Bob in accounts about the Penski file
2. Commit mass-murder of coworker-infidels after heated argument at blasphemous Christmas party
3. Destroy all electronic devices except my work one, which of course has the complete ISIS organisational map and contact details of all my jihadi buddies
4. Leave note w/ neighbour to feed cat & water plants
