I think Tomasky's assertions that, gee, perhaps the COMMUNIST influence on leftist/liberal ideology might have something to do with what Goldberg ascribes to fascism, is a fairly compelling argument that Goldberg's full of shit on his historical analysis, as well as the part where the Nazis shut down the trade unions, reduced wages, and took a lot of money from rich Prussian Junkers and industrialists, which kind of makes the Nazi Party bad proxies for, you know, Hillary Clinton, FDR and the Democrats.

Yes, there was a fetish for central planning/technocracy in the 20th century. For fuck's sake, Richard Nixon, yeah, THAT Nixon, imposed price and wage controls in the 1970's. I think it's a lazy argument to ascribe that to fascism.

i think the term fascist is the equivalent to nazi. It just means someone you don't like.

when used improperly, sure. that doesn't mean it still has a real, specific meaning.

in my all-boys high school, the word "fag" was used as a serious insult. didn't have anything to do with a real statement of homosexuality.

there were nazis and are neo-nazis (take it from a target of theirs). there were and are fascists. it's important to know what defines and motivates these people.

My thoughts on the Jonah Goldberg vs. Stewart thing are similar to Obama vs. Fox News. He was not forced onto the show, he knew the interviewer's body of work and to cry after the fact is sort of stupid. I think Stewart would be gracious to release an unedited interview or full transcript, but if Jonah didn't demand one in his contract, then it's his fault.

That new Governor has ALSO been unfaithful.

I dunno -- the new guy does seem to be laying stuff on the line. He didn't say he paid for anything/tried to circumvent federal laws... Seems to be a very different ball of wax.

I don't care about all that. I'm saying unfaithfulness is a major, tragic character flaw.

I'm not sure his definition of marriage, and how they came to be married. It's painfully obvious that everyone has a different ability to enter into commitments of any type in this world. But I for one would never be resigned to accept that cheating on your spouse was an acceptable trait in myself. And the example I set for others to follow is as such. I know I've kidded about such stuff in these boards, but playing the field is something to do before deciding on a partner for life. At least that's my strategy, and my plans. I've seen tons of people have little self-confidence and free will to make those good decisions and stick with them. The grass is not greener.

To a certain extend I agree with you Bill, that said however, there's always the possibility that things get out of hand. Especially the people that lead very busy social lives run into other people all the time and when things at home are rocky at best, well, things happen.

I have more respect for people getting these things out of the way than people like Ted Haggard.

Agreed Bill -- our neighborhood is happily gaining three new children who are moving into a house that's been for sale most of the winter (winter==bad time to sell).
Sadly, our neighborhood is losing three children as well because a wife has cheated on her husband and they have now split. They have a toddler, 12yr old and 14 yr old. I know how devastating this will be as my father cheated, and the household was generally a shit pile.

I do believe it is a character flaw to not take your life seriously enough to not, excuse the term, dick around with things like relationships and families. It is irresponsible, and just wrong.

The kid thing/broken family is a huge problem. Many of my friends still have a lot of hurt over what happened when their parents split.

I do know a handful of people that do the "divorced but not enemies" thing pretty well, because they consciously want to make things as good as they can for the kids. It seems to work, to some extent.
I suspect, though, that on some level the reality is more like David Ducovny on "Californication", where he is constantly letting things get WAY out of hand...

Yeah, I'm 42 and my biological father is still dicking around with the past and I'm still there. He's so religious he believes all will be OK because "jesus will rewrite history". Mostly I've let it go but when he sends me a card with that written in it, oy vey.

I have to say, in the long run the divorce was better for me simply due to the real man who came into my life when my mom remarried. He's flawed too but he's responsible and honest.

I wonder how the kid-time-share done mostly right works out in the end. My sister did some of this and I never trusted it frankly, but, no accounting for the serious bone head of an ex she had.

My past relationship had a kid involved (8 y/o and not mine) and it was hard for me to pull the plug on that relationship as I had bonded with the little girl quite strongly in the 6 years we were together.

But in the end, it sometimes is better for both the kids and parents to split up, I know that the little girl would notice anyway when we were fighting, even while we did it out of sight. She would just notice and my heart would break every time.

Kids will suffer from a break up, no doubt about it. But the alternative is usually worse.

I don't agree with you that it's possible to compare the SocGen fraud of 7 billion, created by 1 employee, to the mess that everyone in Wall Street got in. Yes, I've seen the interviews of SocGen managers who said that the guys in the dealing rooms are doing things that no-one really understands anymore.

Maybe I'm stupid, but when these innovative things mean that they're inventing profits (because they only look 90 days ahead) something's wrong.
