Politics. Don Granberry on the old Spork Boards was quite fond of talking about them, and here we continue on in that fine tradition.

My dad (a peasant in the old country) nearly blew his head off with some kind of old gun an insanely long time ago. I fancy it was a blunderbuss. The 3d printer will build plenty of exploding blundebusses. I don't own guns, but unless they're glock, please make them out of cold hard steel for me.

Even Glocks have steel barrels. He's firing .22 ammo out of it; full automatic pea shooter.

For future discussions on the efficacy of the assault weapons laws, note that the violent crime rate (as well as most other crime rates) has been decreasing in the US for 20 years.

http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_01.html

Oddly, in Europe, property and non-homicide violent crime is up.

http://www2.dse.unibo.it/zanella/papers/crime-EP.pdf

The graphs on page 3 seem to contradict the general conceptions of crime in the US and Europe.

(Not trying to restart the discussion, I just want to be able to link to this post the next time the issue arises.)

I try normally not to get too political about stuff, but read these posts. I don't know the author or his family.

Author's Response to Progressive Insuance's Denial

Looks like Flo isn't as nice as she seems.

Progressive's statement. If information Matt Fisher reported is accurate, then this is complete crap. No wonder he's infuriated. Progressive seems to say that they will be glad to consider paying what they owe once compelled to by a court of law.

Looks like Fisher was telling the truth, and Progressive was "mistaken." Maryland court records:

...and Progressive finally pays what it owes. All it took was a lawsuit and an internet shitstorm for them to finally do what they had contracted to do. I hope the next customer that they try to screw over has as much luck.

I know schadenfraude is crude and unkind, but sometimes it's oh so sweet...

"Essentially all those factors make Rinehart ... that perfect mix of Bond villain, Marie Antoinette and Cruella de Vil - the kind of stinking rich and socially ham-fisted character that's so easy to hate.

And:

"Rinehart knows what it means to pull yourself up by the bootstraps. She inherited a fortune now estimated to be worth about $18 billion. That's a heavy burden to bear."

ROTFL...

What a journey.
It's stuff like this that makes me wonder if I should have fought my life-threatening disease. I really dislike some aspects of life (in America), and get by mainly through trying to forget about what a clusterfuck some things have become.

Yup, we are really going to kill ourselves...

Australian leaders glibly talk about adapting to a 4-degree world with little idea of what it means - which is a world of 1 billion people rather than the present 7 billion.

Hmmm, it's not just Muslims who get worked up over little trifles...

Brisbane Festival audiences were screened with metal detectors this week after threats were made against a New York burlesque duo.

Organisers of the Brisbane Festival confirmed extra security measures were put in place for the performance by the Wau Wau Sisters at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art, in Fortitude Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, after threats were made against the acrobatic performers.

Authorities have refused to reveal the nature of the threats, although it has been reported extreme Christian groups were behind them.

"Allah wants me to gun down 14-year-old girls."

If your faith is so fragile that a 14-year-old girl, speaking the truth, can threaten it, then you need to ask yourself some serious questions about your faith.

What "courageous warriors" they are for their "faith"...

This is how it starts...

In the US at least you'll be able to relatively easily arm yourself against (or with) the mobs when the "Fiscal cliff" happens next year.

Down here, I just have to hope the (semi) sane economic policies since the GFC won't cause open revolt...

People forget that the socialist un-american "new deal" of the 1930s wasn't brought in to usher in a new era of communism, is was to avert wide-scale rioting and anarchy.

I hope that Wall St are taken out first...

It will always be, "Let them eat cake" right up until the Bastille is stormed.

I'm not even sure it would be a bad thing anymore. The powers-that-be use the rules to tilt things ever more in their favor until the have-nots revolt, tilt the playing field in a new direction, and set up new powers-that-be to restart the cycle.

This might put a dent in the "developing nations aren't doing anything about climate change" argument...

China leads world in solar panel production (over 60% total production and at least 15 times US production). Ironically, so much so that the US and the EU are considering anti-dumping tariffs (given the seriousness of climate-change, such a move would be criminal). China accounts for close to 80% of all renewables.

Costs of Solar panels are down 75% from 2008.

On a smaller scale, this looks promising too...

What a pity a worldwide emissions trading scheme hadn't been implemented 15-20 years ago. We might have saved the planet...
