Politics. Don Granberry on the old Spork Boards was quite fond of talking about them, and here we continue on in that fine tradition.

Sydney Morning Herald to be bought out by Gina Rineheart (mining tycoon & Australia's richest person).

Paper to be renamed "Open-cut: The Australian Mining Daily Soapbox"...

Immensely saddened,

Well, Tony, the Chandlers were a rapacious oil family, but they owned and published the L.A. Times as an eventually excellent (maybe second or third in the States) newspaper for decades, so maybe she's doing it for other reasons... ? Slim chance? I know that is one of your fave things to link to.

Bill, watching it now and it's inspiring. However, I couldn't help thinking of this scene: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vRYBqDDR_HE&fmt=18

(even the voice is comparable)

ddt,

She wants a megaphone to blare her anti-mining tax, anti-carbon tax, anti-any-tax views from. Media companies that aren't parroting her views (and there's not that many) are likely to be strategically raided.

It must be so oppressive sitting on over $10Bn and being expected to pay taxes like everyone else.

Well, we know it's been done (hey, look at Murdoch). It's just amazing to see this out in the open for once.

This is why US science and education is failing.

Just ran into the BBC coverage of that. And yes, this is how the 'scientific evidence' that global warming isn't happening gets produced.

Want to see who's been covering this for ages? You might like some of John Stauber's books and http://www.prwatch.org/

Here's a doozy:

Don't classify me by my means, race, class or gender...

Aside from the mental gymnastics of the difference between means and class, there's the further mind-boggling extrapolation of how "class" can be anything but a system of classification...

Oh wait, I get it. Billionaires are a minority and need special consideration too!

(Note the opinion piece author (billionaire miner) and the new major shareholder of the newspaper (billionaire miner and friend of the other billionaire miner)

Who would want to live 20 years like that? Not I...

Twenty years, sheesh. People routinely offer to euthanize me on only a few minutes acquaintance.
