"what, a Star Destroyer can fucking hover in an atmosphere now"

And what - lightsabers, the force, hyperspace, the ability to send radio messages while in hyperspace, spaceships that have their own gravity (to name just a few) - don't bother you?

Seems you're being very selective with your "Neil DeGrasse Tyson"-ing of Star Wars. It's make believe.

(Unless it gets really silly with nonsense like Midoclorian bloodcounts and whatnot, that's just absurd...)

yeah, about the only thing I want is to be entertained, and as few germs on public seats as possible. :)

Then you might not want to go to some small town theatres, Jeffe (see second graf): https://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2017/12/16/the-star-war-wasok/

I guess what bugged me about the hover is just a) internal inconsistency and b) the trend of recent filmmakers who take on nostalgia titles and try to jam sequences AND plot into single-shot tableaus that they think are "cool" or "iconic", no matter what else suffers. I'm thinking largely, here, of Snyder, but Abrams does it too and this has modeled that behavior to others.

Did Abrams direct Rogue One? (edit: no)

ddt – December 17, 2017 07:20PM Reply Quote
Yes, I know that. Of course I know that. I don't want this to turn into personal attacks/defensiveness.

You obviously treasure all that. That's fine. I like weird things few other people like. But I'm just saying it doesn't work for me (I don't think I'm alone in this), and then trying to explain why, rather than just say "it suuuuucks".

He is kind of in charge of the direction of the franchise, but I was saying more that he's an influence.

Sorry, didn't mean my last comment to be snippy. I googled mid-post hence the edit. And yes, Abrams is still an influence as you say (but I'd argue a slightly better one than Snyder or Lucas).

Apropos of nothing, and because this is a safer space than Facebook: My extremely subjective Star Was rated filmography

Equal 1st: Empire and TLJ (I dunno if this is just post-cinema "afterglow", we'll see how I feel after a second viewing)

Third: Rogue One (they all die, that's dark af...)

Fourth: A New Hope

Fifth: The Force Awakens (or if you're a cynic, "A New Hope 2.0")

Sixth: Return of the Jedi (aka "muppets are cheap labor")

*************** All above this line are pretty decent, below is where the "meh" starts ********************

A distant seventh: Revenge of the Sith

*************** And this is where the "ow, it burns!" butthurt begins ***********************

A *very* distant eighth: Attack of the Arseclowns

Ninth: The Star Wars 1978 Christmas Special (Wookie porn!)

And bringing up the skid-marked rear at Tenth: The Trashed Franchise er, Phantom Menace (I felt truly violated leaving the cinema after that abomination)

Discuss!

No way is Phantom Menace worse than Life Day Special. Beatrice Arthur sang, man. She SANG.

Not when it's 1978 and you're looking forward to the first new Star Wars material since the movie. (No, I don't count books. Splinter of the Mind's Eye sucked.)

My hatred for Jar Jar is strong...

(Mind you, it been a long time since I watched the special, it's really only fragments...)

The Crown, S2e9 - lotsanazis
Ok, I have no clue about Philip and nazis. seems like more nazis that I would have expected. I would have expected zero.
That episode has the most poignant nazi scene i can recall; or expect. right up until his father ....
I could have done without that whole episode, personally. But it was apropos on this day when I was 'hard' on one of mine trying to kick their ass into gear for their own good. and it worked....

The British royals were of German stock, remember. And there was (maybe is) a long and strong fascination with fascism in England -- V for Vendetta was a direct commentary on that, and Thatcherism was a flirtation with it. Nazis were welcome in social circles, especially the upper ones, prior to the outbreak of WWII.

Doctor Who Christmas special -- I bought into it, though I wish the Doctor had paused more at the sad moment when the captain said, "World War... One???". Liked his noting motivations he wanted for the next Doctor -- we should repeat these things to ourselves every day about our daily selves. Thoughts?

Also watched the first two episodes of Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which was silly and fun.

Yes, people are definitely clamoring for more tame shows.

Looking forward to Apple's Game of Scones.

To think that Apple once flew a pirate flag. How did Apple become so conservative?

Apple's always aimed at the mass market, though they don't always hit it. I think that they're confused about where the masses are on video entertainment these days, though.
