Just saw "The Artist." I don't know that it's the best film of 2011, but it's a lot of fun; I've seen just enough old movies to recognize some of the conventions. Very strange to see Penelope Ann Miller--I don't think I've seen her since "Year of the Comet" in 1992.

Well, I wasn't bowled over by it. Predictable, the lead seemed more verrrrry French than Hollywood. But it was fun to check off the mandatory location shots I recognized: the Paramount gate, the Bradbury bulding, Oakwood Street (though most shots were on a lot, of course). It was good to see my old cycling pal Jamie Cromwell, though they didn't do much with him.

dpbd: and though the actress playing Peppy is gorgeous, she and the lead's dancing styles so do not mesh well. Very distracting.

I didn't notice--I was too focused on the fact that she was gorgeous.

"Old cycling pal"?

Yeah, Jamie used to do this group ride that started in Burbank -- and he'd kick ass! He disappeared for a few months, once. When he showed up again, we asked him where he'd been. "Shooting a movie." "Oh, great! What's it about?" "Uhh, a talking pig." "Oookay." And we spoke not more about it. Said movie was Babe.

You hardly needed to name it--great movie, and he was great in it.

I dunno if it was released in the US, but Red Dog is a fantastic movie.

Not ashamed to say I shed a tear...

Sure, we've had that for years.

Watched Peter Greenaway's 'A Zed and Two Noughts' tonight. The zoo they shot it at is the Rotterdam Zoo, which is literally around the corner for me.

got to say some of that is disgusting.

I had only seen 'The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover' of Greenaway (20 years ago or so), but my wife told me he's somewhat occupied by the process of decay as can be seen in of his films, but especially in this one. His films are like moving paintings though. High quality visual compositions. I was especially taken by Nyman's music though, what a composer!

Helen Mirren was great in that movie.

Greenaway is (a fuckload more than) a bit weird though...

Been watching the HBO series of Rome lately.

Very good...

Kinda like Game of Thrones minus the dragons and actually loosely based on historical documents

The DVD set has a subtitle setting where it pops up with all all sorts of factoids about Roman life/culture/society/history throughout each episode. You can almost pretend you're learning history while watching the sex, blood & gore...

Rome was quite good. Too bad it was too expensive for the time and capped at two seasons. It did pave the way for Spartacus though.
