Whatever happened to deep space 9? I liked that spin off (and voyager...)

True. The visual effects weren't computer generated so, yes. I'm not sure what they mean by "recompositioned" though. This is a situation where I'm hoping they "pull a Lucas" and use GCI in place of the old visual effects.

Maybe they can make Worf blink.

Yeah, I am pessimistic -- I think they'll redo a lot of the vfx in new crappy CGI the way they did with the original Trek "special horrible edition" or whatever that was called. But it'll be interesting to see how it's handled.

bill, i hate to encourage piracy… but i just run searches like this … download "debbie does dallas" "filesonic.com" | "oron.com" | "rapidshare.com/files" | "filefactory.com/get/f.php" | "megashares.com/?" | "megaupload.com/?d=" | "www.mytempdir.com/" | "sendspace.com/file/" |

you have to have a couple of those accounts or be willing to wait … the former are getting more popular… new ones appear every year, but i think you get the picture.

now as far as Terra Nova goes.

the CGI seemed sub par. Haven't we had any advancements since Jurassic Park??? Here I was thinking that a new version would be amazing. Ugh.

I watched the 2 hours. Will probably continue just because nothing else is out there. My wife may not.

I really liked what they did with the original series. The interesting thing is that the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray releases are completely 4:3 but the version you could buy from Xbox Live would switch to 16:9 for the space scenes that were redone with CGI. I thought the switch between 4:3 and 16:9 was actually cool because it gave the space scenes a more "expansive" feel.

I can't imagine they'll have a huge budget to do CGI for every episode, can they? I'd rather they spend it getting a commentary track from MST3K. We've been starting to watch the Netflix streams of TNG, and we spend half of it yelling at Troi's unhelpfully obvious emotional readings.

The Netflix streams of TNG are high-def enough to make Riker look even seedier.

I might not be up on my geek terms. Sorry.

With those out, we're pretty much done with Blu-Ray, aren't we? I always said LOTR was the killer and of course Star Wars is out too, albeit the fan's version has to wait until Lucas kicks (by which point half the fans will have kicked).

Wow, I think "Pan Am" had more sfx before the opening title than "Terra Nova" did -- and damn if they didn't do a good job of making me get excited about a, what was it, Boeing 707. The future used to be so shiny.

I need to watch this. I loved the 707 when I was a kid; I remember flying one from New York to Seattle in 1970.

I wanted to make some kind of juvenile joke to commemorate the occasion but I got nothin'. Instead, I'll just post a link to the trailer for the newly resurrected Beavis and Butthead Series.

This is freaking AWESOME!

Now we'll see who has the right to use "Semper Fidelis!"

Sounds like one of my faves, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080736/

I'll say this, modern day food, medicine, and social programs/governments have made today's man far inferior to even common people from Roman times. Without technology, our best would fare poorly against average Roman soldiers.

I think our special forces would do okay for themselves. The average recruit, fresh out of boot camp, probably not. But lets see how the Praetorian Guard does at Angry Birds!

Did you watch the movie The Eagle? Not bad. The British History Podcast dumps on it.

James DeBenedetti – October 14, 2011 01:21PM Reply Quote
Reminds me of Janissaries. Leaving aside the modern day tools, 2K years of additional health / education / engineering / knowledge accumulation would give the Marines an insurmountable advantage. Given the force that arrived, I wouldn't be surprised to see local production of electricity, gunpowder, and purified drinking water within a month of arrival.

I wanted to see the Eagle, but didn't.

I liked Janissaries, though I didn't like the sequel much. I think that a few hundred modern Americans could do a lot (a la Lest Darkness Fall) if they were allowed to do it. If two legions (6,000 men each, by the books. Usually more like 3-4,000) and the Praetorian Guard decided to wipe them out in a hastily prepared position, I think that they might have a problem. Ammo/POL wouldn't last, new/old diseases would be a problem for both sides.

See, I think we are too wussified. I just listened to the Typhoid Mary (stuff you should know) podcast. She'd probably beat the crap out of 70% of today's people. For one, her guts could 'take' typhoid! I think our modern day fighters would go back to Roman days, and the first thing they'd do is get sick from all the bacteria and viruses that our comfortable century has bred out of us. We are the offspring of some of the first waves of NOT the survival of the fittest, and we are weak. I recall some speculation that even some of our fittest athletes would have very little stamina doing some work that men in Roman times for instance could do. But who knows?
