Enjoyed Rise of Planet of the Apes for anyone just wondering.

Am now on A Storm of Swords. My last month has evaporated into these books. Damn you who suggested the series worth reading. Damn you.

Ditto. I'm now onto the fourth book. By rough calculations I've read 3000-odd pages in the last 3-4 weeks which means more than a few nights up reading 'til 1 or 2 in the morning. Not good.

I figure the books could have been considerably shorter if it wasn't for George Martin's penchant for taking an entire page to describe the heraldry of a pile of rather superfluous houses/clans/characters (hint: Tolkien used appendixes, George). Writing the notes to keep track of who is what and where must have driven him insane...

I'm concerned that he is neither in great shape nor is he young. Will he live to finish the series?

Or will he do a Robert Jordan?

Supposedly some chapters of book six are already done (because they were originally for books 4-5 but didn't fit in) but he seems to average 4 to 5 years per book. He needs some lessons from Bryce Courtney - who bangs out a book a year, usually just in time for christmas.

Having just read this article he seems a bit prickly about the criticism about delays:

Quote

Fans' vocal impatience for the next instalment reached such a pitch last year that Martin issued an angry statement to stem a rising tide of anger. "Some of you are angry about the miniatures, the swords, the resin busts, the games. You don't want me 'wasting time' on those, or talking about them here. Some of you are angry that I watch football during the fall," the author wrote. "Some of you don't want me attending conventions, teaching workshops, touring and doing promo ... After all, as some of you like to point out in your emails, I am 60 years old and fat, and you don't want me to 'pull a Robert Jordan' on you and deny you your book. OK, I've got the message. You don't want me doing anything except A Song of Ice and Fire. Ever. (Well, maybe it's OK if I take a leak once in a while?)

DPBD!

On a complete tangent I have become a big fan of films with Paul Giamatti. Sideway, Cold Souls and Barney's version are all very good...

"Attack the Block", a few social issues aside, is awesome.

And Limbo for Mac is out.

Formerly Remy Martin
He can do some sit-ups on the way to the conventions.

Didn't someone say don't get attached to your favorite characters? In Storm of Swords, wondering if any favorite characters will be alive by the end of the book…

Ah, I know which bit of the book you've just read. I had the same reaction...

What a journey.
I won't mention the bible, then.

Yes. I... I... I've grown afraid to love.

We're watching Game of Thrones on HBO (TiVO'd); seen eight of the ten episodes. My wife thinks THIS season is too dark, but more often than not it's she who suggests watching another episode. She heard me lament as I read the books, so she knows it gets worse (without knowing any spoilers). She may end up reading the books.

I'm afraid to name the characters that I like, for fear that I will bring the Wrath of Martin down on them. He does introduce new characters, but at too slow a rate to make up for the casualties.

You know, this really isn't about protecting the owners of that old content... it's about protecting the producers of new content.

If all of this older content started falling out of copyright protection, people would start watching/listening for free and spend less time and money on the new stuff.

Thanks to Netflix, Amazon and Crackle, I am watching a lot of older movies and TV shows because I enjoy them and I don't have to pay a hundred bucks a month to a cable or satellite provider.

I dunno. I don't see the teen masses swarming to the Beatles and Herman's Hermits, regardless of copyright status. The money in music used to be with young listeners. I think that, now that that cash cow has been substantially deflated, the corporations are contenting themselves with a smaller revenue stream in perpetuity.

Cost: One billion euros. 72% to the labels, 24% to "superstar" artists, 4% to the mass of artists.

Right. This is to save EMI.

Okay, I don't like Matt Smith and this series of Who has been pretentious and weak. But damn if Karen Gillan hasn't had me sniffling a bit two weeks in a row. And making me think she's an even better actor is seeing her as herself on Craig Ferguson's show, where she really just does seem like a young, slightly silly girl who's not sure what next to say.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't in love with Matt Smith. I don't hate him but I definitely preferred Eccleston and Tennant.

Tom Baker. He's the only Dr. Who's that I ever watched, back in the 1970's.

You gotta start with the Eccleston. An angry, guilty doctor. Uneven, but builds to "The Doctor Dances".
