Honestly, Tony, the books are great. Not as deep as Tolkien, but much "realer," with complex plots and intertwining characters. He'll never displace Tolkien in my heart, but he's set up a nice place nearby. Perhaps in one of my lungs...

Oh boy. Had a good friend of mine recommend these books early in the 2k's... 5+years of waiting patiently for the next in the series... then 18 months ago... Its coming to TV... God please don't make it suck like "Legend of the Suceeker". Peter Dinklage *yay*, Sean Bean *squee*. Man the series is awesome. The books are (aren't they always) better. Some pieces got cut/short shrifted which is bound to happen on TV. 2nd season already in the pipeline...
Some folks say he's the "american Tolkien". I call him the Anti-Robert-Jordan. RJ would have 50 characters "on stage" and somehow 3 more would arrive. NOBODY died. in ASoIaF... let's just say... people die.

Short in stature, slightly deformed, with a weird fixation on something... you may be surprised
Love the books. I just bought the fifth book on Amazon. I actually like the iBooks format better, but I gave my iPad to somebody to borrow and there is a mac kindle reader I can use on my laptop on the plane.
I have been reading a lot more lately and this series really got me to consider reading more fantasy. It is hard to beat the wonderfully tight story that Tolkein had in LOTR, but I think Martin does just a good of a job setting up the world in ASOIAF. Not only should you not be wed to any favorite characters, you should not be surprised if the characters you hate and/or love turn "heel" or "face" (to borrow wrestling terms) throughout the books. Dealing with the changes in how these characters evolved has been one of my favorite parts of the series.

I agree. Tolkien is "High Fantasy," kind of a cross between the sagas and Le Morte d'Arthur. None of the characters there would ever dream of excreting. Martin has a much more modern feel, while remaining firmly grounded in fantasy. His characters develop, change (for better or worse), and excrete in a world that is filled with other people developing, changing, and excreting.
I wonder how long before there's a Song of Ice and Fire MMO...

So there's sex and scatology?

Lots of sex, not so much excretion. It's just that his characters are more three dimensional, and if there WAS a scene in a privy, it would seem natural.

Well, I've bought the first book today. I was in the bookshop saying to a friend "it's like lord of the rings - but with sex in it!"
And the woman at the end of the aisle said "I'll have what he's having..."

Glanced at the first episode and the few seconds I saw had wolf puppies. Fuzzy, cute wolf puppies. I know their narrative situation at that moment was not a happy one, but I just wanted to watch at least 30minutes of fuzzy wolf puppies -- forget those human things.

Very important difference.
I started the first book last night. So far I think I'm focusing overly much on things that are different from the series--which is silly, because I know there will be a lot of things different from the series.

So, if George Martin had written LOTR Frodo and Sam would have been bumped of by the black riders in the first few chapters?
