watch his early short "vincent" -- that was, at the time, very inventive with an original voice/look. he's kind of gotten to into BEING TIM BURTON, if you know what i mean. but maybe with strong source material, it'd reign in his indulgences.

I think he has a lot of potential, and great budget and casting, but there is usually something I come away with that always leaves me wanting something else/better/diff/more. Including big fish which I really had high expectations for.

He just seems so cliche now. Vincent was marvelous. Nightmare was excellent. James and the giant peach? Charming. Batman, excellent. Big Fish... his best achievement. Edward Whatshishands? Probably alright following the cute Beetlejuice... It all just seems a bit predictable now...

uch, batman was awful. scorcese should have given it a shot.

Earlier post was done while running errands. Still very impressed.

I saw Sweeney Todd back in the 80's /90's a few times, touring company and college productions. The Burton film uses all the Sondheim music and is mostly faithful to the script. There are Burton touches, and the visual design is "signature" but nothing particularly silly. It is still a "musical" but moves at a perfect pace.

It is a proper mainstream movie, with an array of mostly subtle digital effects. The soundtrack is quite nice, great care has been taken in the post production/re-recording to use technology to present the actors' voices in the most agreeable way.

The Sondheim play is not really "great literature" put does present a believable picture of a mass murder driven by revenge and contempt for others -- Burton uses his skills to amplify upon that in a very entertaining way. There were places where a more biting or obvious social critique could have been made, but this is a PG13 musical that I think will appeal to a broad audience.

Worth seeing.

Strange, I downloaded "High Fidelity" from stage6 on Dec. 2nd and recall seeing a long, long list of TV shows and movies but now the place is all growed up and looks very legit.
BTW -- it's a DivX video sharing site. SubPop, a favorite record label, has a channel and some fun music videos posted.

actually that's not the right set of questions. i suppose it's already reached the point that blogging text did ... had a quick take off and now it'll settle into the curve of a ton of eyeballs on a few producers and many, many eyeballs on a whole lot of content. dunno what i'm trying to figure out.

It's pretty much well known that if you even remember the harmony of a song, you've crossed the line, imo.

I went to the Dancing with the Stars Tour tonight. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Got to see Joey Lawrence, Joey Fatone and Wayne Newton!

OK. Just saw Sweeny Todd - if you're a fan of the musical, it's 50/50 you'll hate, and I mean =hatehatehate= this. It's not whimsical. It's not lighthearted. It's macabre in a deeply meaningful and disturbing way... it's horror for the jaded and cynical, as it uses Burton's visual vocabulary and Depp's acting resumé to open you up to a lighthearted experience, only to be blindsided and then consumed by this dark and dire avatar of purposelessness rage.

The Cohen Bros. "No Country for Old Men" is the same... our national dreams are dark and disturbed. Villains prosper, heroes are shallow, misery abounds, pain is strong and deep and bereft of any hope that isn't fantasy. These are movies of a nation at war with itself, anguished with one wrong decision after another.

Justified? Sweeny Todd had justification, and he was a monster, as horrible as has ever been seen on film.

This is a defining film, for Burton, for Depp, for Sondheim, for the USA. This is genius, with the special effects used to bring fog-shrouded Victorian London to life, and for that alone, it is worth seeing. For a cultural zeitgeist, it's on par with A Touch of Evil, Apocalypse Now, and Blade Runner.

it's nowhere NEAR by see-it list. I was just commenting yesterday that I had heard Depp's films grossed over 6 BILLION....but this one won't add a drop of water in that ocean.
