They DID alter their OS X Server license so that it will run on VM's. At least a year ago.

[EDIT]
Mac OS X Leopard Server virtual machines?
Yes, VMware Fusion 3 now supports Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard in a virtual machine.

So what is Apple going to put in that shiny new NC facility? Are they really mad enough to populate it with MacPros?

Seems like it.

John,

sorry, i wasn't clear. Fusion only runs on Macs. I need something that will allow me to run snow leopard on server class computers. Something like VMware ESX running on rackmount servers from other vendors. Some sort of funky esx plugin that allows me to install snow leopard. And even in that case, it means I am going to have to install add Windows or Linux servers to run ESX. This is all fucking kinds of terrible. And in places where I could easily sneak in an xserve because it's only 1u, I need 6u to rack a MacPro plus 1-4U for external raid storage it is going to need. Stupid fuckers.

My apologies; I thought that any VMWare install could run OS X Server.

I think if Apple eased their license for server, VMware would come out with a good product to support it. I don't think there is a technical reason why other versions of VMware aren't included. I'm guessing VMware is just not taking any chances pissing off apple. I would play with getting OS X x86 running on, say, a Dell R710, but not sure I can get any of my clients to be a guinea pig and buy the hardware.

There's lots of how-to's on how to get OS X and OS X Server running on VMWare for Windows, but they all seem to use hacks to get it installed. I don't think that you'd want that for a production environment.

Perhaps they're working on an iPad server edition...

So what DO we suppose is filling up that new data center? Once again, a really impressive level of secrecy has been attained. But something wicked this way comes, don't you think?

I have looked for that movie everywhere in town, and cannot find it for rent.
But Sam's Club had it for sale.

My phone found its way into the toilet today. It was frustrating but I thought, "Hey! I'm paying $6/month for insurance on this thing so I'm fine." Well, times have changed. The last time I needed to replace a phone with insurance like that was a long time ago and there was no deductible so I was in for a bit of a shock when I learned it was going to cost me $130 this time around.

porruka (Admin) – December 27, 2010 12:08PM Reply Quote
Only $130? That's a major bargain compared to the early termination fees, the we have to update our records fees, and the you still have to buy another phone fees. Isn't free-market competition doing wonders for the consumer?
