Well, it's about time.

Some of the 5400s are better than 7200s. RPM speed isn't everything. And of course if I could bear not to fill it, it would be faster than my Seagate.

Yes, I have a Unibody. Will be fine.

Getting the 750gb WD drive today. Very much looking forward to the extra speed and ALL my music on the drive.

Ahem.

So, am I the only one to whom this has happened? It occurs to me that I haven't backed up my iTunes library in a couple of months. So I go first to sync my iPod, then to run the backup. The iPod sync reports numerous errors--files not synced because they could not be found. And I notice that my external drive, on which my iTunes library is located, is not mounted, and indeed is not spinning. I shut down the computer, then turn the power on the external drive off, then on. It spins up. I reboot. It doesn't mount. I try various permutations of USB and Firewire ports. Nothing. Disk Utility doesn't see a disk. About This Mac sees an unknown external device when connected through Firewire, and a USB hub when connected to USB (this is an OWC miniStack external enclosure with a 500 GB WD drive).

Fortunately, I do have a backup from the end of August. Unfortunately, I've made some iTunes purchases since then. Idiot. I'm going to try putting the drive in a different enclosure tomorrow, but I'm not terribly hopeful. Dammit.

You all are smarter than I am and backup regularly, right?

(Yeah, this old iMac is still running Tiger. No Time Machine.)

I have two Lacie drives that did that to me too, Jeff...

Okay, in a different enclosure, the drive still doesn't mount, but at least Disk Utility now recognizes there's something there (although it will neither mount nor verify the disk). Next: Disk Warrior? (Sorry, this probably belongs in Sporkers Helping Sporkers, but "kersplat" is what I thought when the disk failed).

I have had good luck with Data Rescue II.

Went to run Data Rescue 3 this morning. Turned on the wonky external hard drive, and it mounted. Everything seems to be there. Currently running a regular backup and crossing fingers.

Backup went fine. At this point I'm thinking that the problem was the Newer Tech ministack enclosure--research turned up a number of complaints of drives in these enclosures unmounting and then not being able to re-mount. The enclosure has a one-year warranty. I purchased the enclosure on November 7, 2008, and the failure occurred on November 15, 2009, so the timing was just about perfect.

Is Data Rescue better than Diskwarrior?

Jeff Cooper – November 20, 2009 06:23PM Reply Quote
They do different things. Data Rescue is pure salvage: get what files you can off the failing drive. Disk Warrior repairs damaged file directories. My plan was to start with Data Rescue because (1) my principal concern was saving my iTunes library, and (2) it has a free demo mode that lets you know what, if anything, it can salvage (although if you want to actually rescue the files, you have to buy a license). I figured I'd start with free. Plus, Data Rescue says to start with it, on the ground that other programs that attempt repairs might mess up existing files instead.

Sounds like the White House crasher problem is in part a database problem; they underestimated the importance of the database and the person who knew how to use it.

what is the fucking creaming all over "tim ferriss" (not the science writer, the "4-hr workweek" dude) about? come on, any counterpoints, or links to non-hypnotized people?

Has he been on Oprah?

The world can always use another Tony Robbins / Billy Blanks. One hit wonders often can leverage things to their own advantage for an remarkably long time...

The success of a guy like that can be mathematically predicted -- (loss of normal jobs) + (lack of hiring) = (search for alternatives) , (search for alternatives) + (too good to be true) + (attractive media presence) = (high probability for success)

I suspect that he'll crater soon, probably becuase he has already spread himself too thin and the "outsourcing" curve generally turns VERY BAD in a very big way after those to whom you've outsourced discover just how difficult a task they've been hoodwinked into promising they can do with ease...

Pity. My vehicle in Car Wars was always a Saab Blood Eagle. (Compact w/Laser Turret). 2030 was a good model year.

*sigh* I loved my durable, trouble-free, trusty 900. maybe someday I'll restore one.

though maybe it'd have been better if they'd mercy-killed saab earlier, to avoid abominations like the subaru-saab or the blazer-saab.
