Did you have an authenticator? That sucks. I'd get Customer Service to restore your account, just in case you ever want to go back. Or if you want to illegally sell the account. Or if you want to send me all your stuff.

I might buy an authenticator if I do stick with the game.

It's funny I got much more upset about losing all the gear that had taken MONTHS of work to get than i did about a carer who stole some petty cash off me recently.

All my gear sold for just a bit over 6K in gold. Sigh...

I don't think I could have keystroke loggers or anything like that on my Mac - what would the chances of that be?

(And if I do quit - you can have all my gear JW - you'll just be stuck playing alliance characters...)

Very low. How difficult was your password? Might it have been brute-force guessed? Any mods that you use require authentication to install? (I have 11 80's now... some are Alliance.)

Maybe brute-force guessed but that goes for any password. In the meanwhile it's a two-week wait to see if I get any of my gear/money/etc recovered or not...

(the one plus of high level 80 characters is a lot of their gear will be soulbound non-redeemable-for-money type gear which means you don't lose everything - still, I lost a bloody lot...)

I just finished Red Dead Redemption... I love that game. I found the ending traumatic... like getting yanked out of great book.

What a journey.
That is one game I have heard about that sounds interesting. Do you think it's appropriate for 12/13 year olds?

Probably not. The game lets you do ANYTHING. I played as a nice guy, but I could have been murdering innocent people all over the place. (I DID murder guilty people all over the place, but they were trying to murder me.) I saw one cutscene depicting sex with exposed breasts (the cutscene, not me), and there may well be others. Some strong language... shit, fuck, bullshit, etc.

The game is an amazing portrayal of the last days of the Old West. You can ignore the plot and just ride around and hunt, or explore, or rob stagecoaches. It's an open world; in the same sense that Grand Theft Auto IV encapsulated New York City, RDR encapsulates prairies, mountains, forests, deserts in the US and Mexico.

My kids would love to play it (and watched me play at times), but I don't want my daughters running around shooting prostitutes in the face. In the game, or out.

I don't know. It sounds like a potential family bonding opportunity.

If your surname is Addams (or maybe Manson)

That's why they like to watch. When I'm playing, I can generally limit the heinousness (heinosity?) of what they see on screen. At worst, I can pause a cutscene and tell them to do something else for a few minutes. I really want to let them play, as it is like stepping into a (good) Western film, and I think that there is historical interest in the way that things are portrayed. Obviously, "bad guy" encounters are greatly exaggerated in frequency, but still... The problem is that my kids kept wanting to see what happened if I shot innocent people or animals, and I think it would be a bloodbath if I let them lose on the Old West. I want to make sure that they understand the difference between people and pixels in such a realistic game before I let them play. They play WoW all the time, where I feel that the more cartoon-ish images provide greater separation.

I always think back to Civilisation, and my fondness for nuke-n-pave tactics ;-)

Well, they could try throwing down a few consecrations at the schoolyard - but I think splashing a bit of holy water around just won't have the same thrill...

You've seen pictures of the youngest in her belf paladin gear.

Does she tank though?

I've given up ever trying to successfully tank Halls of Reflection. You get a pile of dps and healers screaming "hold aggro!" and it's just a disaster - too hard to do with one finger and a trackball...

She's more DPS. I don't do instances much. I don't need to be critiqued for not getting the choreography right by characters named "DarthLegolasXX."

Ooh! Scary! Scary! Don't we look mean? You can't see me! But I can see you!
I'm into Red Dead Redemption right now too. Sergio Leone would be amazed. And Ennio Morricone's scores from all of Leone's films were most certainly referenced in more than one spot. I agree with everything JW has to say about the game so far. Next to the Uncharted series, this has been the best gaming experience I've had on the PS3.

So funny because it's true...

So what do you do? Just PVP?

Just questing and crafting. When I hit 80, I get the best gear I can craft/afford and start an alt. I'm about to get my 12th level 80. I did get a few characters through the Argent Tournament to get the heirloom gear.

Tony Leggett (Moderator) – June 17, 2010 10:22PM Reply Quote
Hmmm... I got bored with questing once I hit 80 but I guess if you're continually starting new characters that's not such an issue.

Argent tournament? I'll have to look that up...
