Apple shipped over 3 million Macs this quarter. About 17% more than they've ever shipped in a single quarter before (2.6 million in Q408).

I read somewhere the other day that for new computers over the US$1000 mark, Apple has almost 90 percent market share. Strike that,

Apple seems to have "decoded a secret message" when it comes to staying connected to customers in the price category where it can be profitable. By itself that would be remarkable, coupled with the success it has in the MP3 and smartphone space it is all the more amazing. Basically in EVERY segment that in competes in they hold the high ground AND the market share.
I know that some folks here seem to disagree that "Apple knows their customers" but the numbers are hard to argue with. With the economic downturn hitting even a lot of people that must be part of Apple's target the facts suggest that Apple customers are simply unwilling to consider cheaper alternatives / there are few (? no) real competing products. Says an awful lot about just how well Apple is meeting the needs of the marketplace...

Either that or they would have even higher profits if they were willing to compete in other price points. I don't see how an Apple box has any competitors. I don't want a budget box. I have that in the Mini. I want a box with some power (quad core), but no slots and junk. One hard drive bay besides the original would be nice, no need even for the drives to be in there. I want a fast graphics card. 5 x USB, Firewire 400 and 800, Gig Ethernet, and DVI out. For that, I'd pay $1800. I don't see what's budget about that or what wouldn't make them cash. I guess I could build a hackintosh, but must I?

Quad core iMac is $1999, ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics with 512MB, 4GB memory, no room for an onboard second HD, but the screen is actually impressive 27 " @ 2560 x 1440 resolution, Wireless keyboard and new Magic Mouse. Standard. A whole lot of value. Really.
I too would LOVE to see Apple offer a "super mini/ maxi mini" put I would NOT pay double what they are asking for the "mini Server". I frankly I would have a really hard time forking over more than $499 for the mini, and I would want to have 4GB of RAM minimum, ideally something about 4x that...

Sure, Stan, but I don't have room on my desk for an iMac. I already have a monitor there for my laptop/mini. It could handle a mini-tower too, but I can't handle an iMac.

As for the server… Apple hasn't figured that out yet.
I want an
iTunes Server (no biggie, some slight tweaks will get the latest there)
iPhoto Server (yah, biggie)
easy-to-configure server that works with me.com
some kind of home-based web server that can be accessed from outside a firewall (think me.com) but has wikis, calendars and junk. (maybe this can live on the cloud, but at home, it's nice to have everything integrated with ical and junk
maybe even some dyndns-mac.me hybrid for rolling your own home ISP. crazy yes? yes. but so is dialing into an airport to get a modem.
Am I nuts? Ya, I is consumer. OS X Server is fine for office, but it is way overkill at home.

You could switch that monitor on your desk out for the iMac since it now can operate as a monitor for other Macs.

Leopard server is pretty cool in the 'basic' configuration mode/setup.
I'm not sure of all the ins and outs of SL server, but I have been impressed.

That's weird.
I guess that makes mr. 27" more attractive, but being tied to one hard drive of Apple's choice inside a jewelbox isn't too attractive to me. I'm no fan of that sort of thing.
